With Halloween approaching here are some tips to help get you through the Day/Night
These are just TIPS, pick and choose and do what works for your family, or pass along to someone who might find them useful šŸŽƒ

1. Practice wearing your costumes at home. - This will help your child get use to the costume and not be so resistant on Halloween. Start where they are maybe only having it one for 1 minute, 5 minutes, maybe even just holding the costume.

2. Create a social story about what you will be doing on halloween, and read it often.

3. Create a visual schedule for halloween day/night- this could be pictures of the activities you will do, or even just written words, it could even include a map of the route you will take for tick or treating

4. Practice trick or treating with friends or family leading up to halloween- this can be actually going to others doors or role playing in home

5. Keep trick or treating short and sweet. Know your childā€™s limits if trick or treating is only 10 minutes so be it.

And remember Halloween looks different for everyone so do what you know is best for your child/children ! Have fun šŸŽƒšŸ‘»šŸŽƒ

I cringe when I hear ā€œ can you pick that up?ā€ Or instructions that start with can. And not to just be in control, and tell people what to do. Itā€™s that fact that If I ask ā€œ can you pick that pick that up?ā€ And the client says no, I have to RESPECT that, and most people/technicians/therapists ( whatever you like to call them) will not, they will follow through and promptā€¦ it was a question and they responded! Live with it and try again later šŸ¤Ŗ I actually had to change how I present instructions to my husband because of this!

No two people are at exactly alike, so no treatment plans should be exactly alike, goals may be similar and may address the same skills, but the implementation will always be a little different because the learner is different. If your clinical team is rigid and there is no flexibility for individual differencesā€¦RUN.
