This is a great article that highlights the Anatomy Outreach for Research and Teaching Advancement (AORTA) Program at UNE. This article features our Falcons as they experienced the AORTA program. Thank you again to the University of New England and Dr. Redway for allowing us to extend our learning into his lab!

Mountain Valley High School

In partnership with teachers in Maine schools, UNE is developing STEM lessons to encourage students to envision themselves pursuing careers in STEM fields. Created by Tyler Redway, Ph.D., an assistant professor of anatomy in UNE's College of Osteopathic Medicine, in 2024, the program brings 500 high...

As we enter the final stretch for our school year, we reflect on our travel over the course of the school year! This year we were able to take 14 trips to 22 different locations throughout the state of Maine. Falcons put 2,592 miles on buses and vans throughout the course of the '25-'26 school year on these trips. The good news is that we have secured funding through grants specifically to make these trips happen again in the '26-'27 school year!

On Monday we were lucky enough to send some of Mrs. Garbarini's classes to the University of New England's Portland Campus to participate in their Anatomy Outreach for Research and Teaching Advancement (AORTA) session. This program has first-year medical students, and UNE faculty members facilitate these sessions and provide real-life insight into human anatomy. Students saw and interacted with human brains, hearts, knees, shoulder joints, and other parts. This was a powerful way for students to extend their learning to real-world contexts.

The Maine DOE has created a book highlighting 53 ELOs throughout Maine. One of the highlighted ELOs was Mountain Valley Junior David Bishop's experience at ND Paper in the first semester of this school year. It is great to see our students highlighted at the state level.

Last Thursday all of our freshmen had the opportunity to tour one of three post-secondary sites. One group went to the University of Maine at Farmington, another went to Central Maine Community College, and the final went to the Walmart Distribution Center. These amazing sites allowed MVHS freshmen to envision their future selves. We thank all three organizations for allowing our students to use their space as classrooms for the day.

Yesterday, four Falcons were able to take part in a group extended learning opportunity alongside students from 4 other area high schools at the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA). Students took part in a medical bootcamp that featured hands-on activities across multiple areas of healthcare. Students were able to practice basic nursing skills like taking vital signs and dressing wounds, explore what dental hygienists and dentists do while cleaning teeth, hear about pathways in behavioral health, and interact with nursing faculty. This was a wonderful opportunity, and we thank the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) for allowing us to take part. Our community should be very proud of the way our Falcons represented Mountain Valley High School.
