Lakenzie needs your help!
On February 2, 2024, Lakenzie Schindler, 20, was snowmobiling in the Cooke City area with her family when she was involved in a terrible accident. She was thrown off of her sled and it rolled over her, hitting her hard on her back, and breaking it in 4 places. The instant everything stopped moving, Lakenzie found that she was unable to move or feel anything from the waist down. She was assisted immediately by an amazing group of bystanders and then by Cooke City SAR and EMS and then flown to Billings where she underwent a 5-hour surgery resulting in 2 – 8” rods and 8 screws being placed to stabilize her back. Her doctors reported that her spinal cord was not severed, but that it was compressed by the broken bones, resulting in her inability to move or feel anything below the break. Lakenzie spent 10 days in the ICU and then on February 12th, she was flown to the world-renowned neurorehabilitation, Craig Hospital, in Englewood CO, where she will spend the next 60 to 90 days. Her doctors stressed the importance of her family being involved in Lakenzie’s healing process, therefore, her father, mother, and two younger brothers are with her during her rehabilitation.

About Lakenzie
Before the accident, Lakenzie was working at Westmorland Mines as an Engineering Tech, full time, while attending college classes online, majoring in engineering and biology. When not working or attending her college classes, Lakenzie reportedly loves to do just about anything as long as it is outside, which includes snowmobiling with her family, as she was on the day of her accident. As everyone who has come in contact with Lakenzie will attest; Cooke City EMS and SAR, her doctors, and now her rehabilitators, she is a very positive, upbeat person, even as she navigates through this life-changing event.

What we are asking
The community of Cooke City recognizes the burden this unimaginable tragedy has caused for Lakenzie and her family; therefore, we are raffling off some donated items all to benefit Lakenzie and her family. This will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at the annual UYSC Hog Roast Fundraiser . Please help us help Lakenzie and her family through this difficult time. Raffle donation will be posted later. December 31, 2023: A person can trigger an avalanche where weak snow is capped with a supportable, cohesive slab. Avalanche danger is MODERATE. for all the details at: www.mtavalanche.com/forecast

The most suspect slopes are where strong winds drifted last week’s snow into thicker slabs or where more snow accumulated last week. The likelihood of triggering an avalanche has decreased as each day passes without snow, but large slides remain possible in specific areas. Before riding or crossing steep slopes assess the snowpack for instability. Avoid steep terrain where you find a poor snow structure, or if you see obvious signs of instability like collapsing and cracking.

All slopes in our forecast area have weak snow, yet only some are unstable. Slopes under 30 degrees steepness are generally safe because they are not avalanche terrain. If you want to play on steeper slopes, I recommend digging and testing layers or be content rolling the dice. Without a whumpf or cracking, the avalanche risk is not apparent. A clean break in a column test indicates unstable conditions.

The danger is MODERATE in the mountains around Bozeman to Big Sky, West Yellowstone, Island Park and Cooke City.
