Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays, everyone. 🎄❤️
This time of year, people talk about wish lists… and honestly, all I want for Christmas is for public education to be respected, protected, and treated as the public good it truly is.

Our schools should be places of learning, belonging, curiosity, and love — not battlegrounds for political agendas. And yet, groups like Moms for Liberty keep trying to infiltrate school boards, restrict books, silence educators, and undermine the inclusive, community-centered values that public schools are meant to uphold. That is not protecting children — it’s hurting them.

What’s wild is they claim moral high ground while pushing policies rooted in fear, control, and exclusion. If we’re talking about values? Jesus taught compassion, inclusion, truth, and caring for the most vulnerable. 📖✨
There is nothing Christlike about censorship, cruelty, or attacking public schools.

So this Christmas my wish is simple:
🎁 Funding that reflects our priorities
🎁 Respect for teachers and staff
🎁 Safety without censorship
🎁 Inclusion without shame
🎁 Schools that feel like home for every child

Because public education is a public good. It deserves better than political sabotage. It deserves our protection, our advocacy, and our love.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and here’s to a new year where our schools get the respect they deserve. 🎄💛📚

BOE Retreat: Too Little, Too Late?

After being delayed since the summer, the Board of Education finally held its retreat — and it revealed what many in the community have been watching unfold in real time:
➡️ broken trust
➡️ poor planning
➡️ social media misconduct
➡️ policy failures
➡️ micromanagement concerns

What’s striking? Several board members who ran on their “accomplishments” during reelection spent much of this meeting acknowledging how things went wrong — after the election.

Was the delay about logistics… or optics?

On June 9, 2025, the Roxbury Board of Education will be reviewing challenged books — again.

Yes, the same books that were already reviewed and upheld by the district in 2023 after a thorough process.

Gender Q***r - reviewed and kept in general circulation

This Book is Gay - reviewed and placed behind the counter, requiring parental permission to check out

So why are we here again?
🎭 The hypocrisy is clear: When outcomes don’t match certain agendas, the goalposts move.

Let’s call this what it is — a second attempt to ban books already deemed appropriate by educators and professionals.

A few years ago expanded school vouchers ( AKA SCHOOL CHOICE) were uncommon as a handful of states implemented them - and despite the utter disaster they have been for public schools and state budgets ( see Arizona) the new federal administration has launched a full on media campaign to sell these programs to American families. We get it, school choice sounds fantastic - but this is a label used purposefully to mislead you.
Not only do public school families not actually use these programs in significant numbers- but they lead to the destruction of the public schools we rely on. Check out our new blog post for more information.

Today we recognize International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the day in 1945 that the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp was liberated.

We honor the 6 million Jews and the millions of Roma, Sinti, Slavs, people with disabilities, LGBTQ+ individuals, political dissidents and others who were murdered in the Holocaust.

It’s customary to hold a moment of silence in memory of people who died tragically. If we held a moment of silence for every one of the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust, we would be silent for over 11 years.

Holocaust Remembrance Day is an opportunity to reflect on the memory of all those who perished in the Holocaust, and the enduring legacy of those who survived, including those who took great risks to resist N**i dehumanization.

Today and every day, we must continue to condemn hatred, Holocaust denial, antisemitism and all forms of discrimination.

It is important that individuals, governments, and other institutions share and learn from stories of Holocaust survivors in order to help educate young people about the Holocaust and the great harms caused by blind hatred and bigotry.

It looks like the White House Office for Gun Violence Prevention was shut down.
If so, it’s truly a shame. The office was created to administer the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act that was passed in 2022 after the Uvalde massacre in Texas and work with communities on creative solutions to address gun violence.
The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act provides funding for red flag laws, creates protections for victims of domestic violence, implements penalties for gun trafficking and straw purchasing, enhances background checks for people under 21, and invests in community violence intervention initiatives.
The creation of the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention led a cross-agency public health approach to preventing gun violence. This contributed to a significant drop in the rise of unserialized and untraceable ghost guns, the largest-ever decrease in the homicide rate, and historic funding for Community Violence Intervention programs.

What they did: Advance policy recommendations about guns
Advance accurate data and research about gun violence (Remember Congress PREVENTED the CDC from studying gun violence at all for TWENTY years!)
Perform state and local outreach and education (One initiative was to educate parents on the importance of safe storage)
Maximize and coordinate programs and services related to preventing gun violence.
What they DID NOT do:
Change any laws regarding WHO can own guns or WHAT guns can be owned.
It focused on putting an office in place whose responsibility was to collect and communicate information about gun violence, and use the resulting conclusions to advice congress moving forward.
They were doing such good work and were tracking the actual RESULTS. This is a tragic step backwards in our fight for the safety of our children- guns are still the number 1 killer of children in the US and the US has a gun death rate 26x that of any peer nation. IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE THIS WAY!

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed January 24th as International Day of Education, in celebration of the role of education for peace and development.
Education offers children a ladder out of poverty and a path to a promising future.
Without inclusive, equitable education and lifelong opportunities for everyone, achieving gender equality and breaking the cycle of poverty will remain impossible, leaving millions of children, youth, and adults behind.
