Regardless if you delivered your baby vaginally or via Caesarean Section you can expect to have bloody vaginal discharge (lochia) for the first few days. Lochia will decrease and lighten in color to a pale pink, then a pale yellow or white for up to 6 weeks. Lochia may have a fleshy, musty, or earth smell and may be heavier when you first get out of bed or after physical activity. Use a pad vs a tampon until your doctor has told you it is safe to resume using tampons. Tampons can increase the risk of infection.
Notify your doctor if you soak more than 1 pad in an hour, pass clots the size of a golf ball or larger, have bright red bleeding after day 4, notice your lochia is foul smelling, have a fever over 100.4, have severe pain in your lower abdomen.

Wondering if you are in labor?
During true labor your contractions occur a regular intervals and get stronger and closer together over time. False labor contractions may catch you off guard and are normally mild to moderate pain; however, they come and go and don't get stronger over time. Typically if you are hydrated, rest, change your position, or move around like going on a walk, false labor will subside.
Never hesitate to call your doctor if you feel uncomfortable, concerned, or unsure! If you are advised to go to the hospital, it might turn out to be a false alarm but it's always best to follow your doctors advice and get checked out.

Pitocin is a synthetic version of Oxytocin, a naturally produced hormone, which helps imitate labor by causing the uterus to contract.
Pitocin can be used for three different reasons:
1. Induce Labor: whether you choose to be induced at 39 weeks or greater, or, you and your doctor decided you need to be medically induced; Pitocin is one of the few medications you can receive to start labor.
Pitocin is given through an IV at a very small dose and gradually increased until your contractions are 2-3 minutes apart.
2. Augment Labor: If natural labor has slowed or stalls you might Pitocin to help keep labor moving along. Augmentation can be offered if you stop making cervical change, if an epidural weakens your contractions, if your contractions become irregular, slow, or stop, or if during pushing your baby isn't moving.
3. Manage Third Stage of Labor: AWHONN and WHO both recommend the use of Pitocin after birth to prevent and treat postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) a life threatening complication from excessive bleeding.
Pitocin can be a very useful tool to help start labor, speed-up labor, and help prevent and treat PPH; however, the drug does have side effects and it is important that you talk to your healthcare provider about the pros and cons and what is the best decision for the safety of you and your baby.
