Throwback Thursday - Roseau in History
When did the first settlers get here?
According to Hazel Wahlberg’s account in the Roseau County Heritage Book, the first settlers began trickling into the Roseau Valley around 1890. Just five years earlier, in 1885, there were only four known settlers in the entire county. By 1889, that number had surged to 600, with immigrants arriving in the US from across Europe, drawn by the promise of opportunity and fertile land.
Roseau County itself was officially created on February 28, 1894, carved from Beltrami and Kittson counties. It wasn’t until 1897 that the county became fully organized, laying the foundation for the thriving communities that still exist today.
The journey to Roseau was not for the faint of heart. For those who braved the hardships, it became home—a place built on perseverance and resilience. It all started with the dreams of those who dared to cross the ocean on boats like the Hannover.

🍂 ROSEAU FALL FEST HOTDISH COOK-OFF RESULTS! 🍂

Nine hotdishes entered the competition this year, and there was no shortage of Minnesota comfort food! A huge THANK YOU to everyone who brought a dish, shared a family favorite, and helped make our Hotdish Cook-Off such a fun part of Fall Fest.

Good morning, Roseau! ☀️🍂 It’s 33° and we’ve got our first little frost on the pumpkin! Sven’s scraping the windshield with a rewards card while Ole hollers, “Just scrape your side—we’re only going for coffee!” 😂🎃

This morning’s sunrise drone flight over Roseau, Minnesota, caught the autumn leaves at peak, with reds, oranges, and golds glowing all across town. Uff da, she’s a pretty sight!

Grab your coffee and enjoy this bird’s-eye view of fall in northern Minnesota. Still a fine morning for a porch sit—just check that the chair’s dry first, ya know! ☕🍁
