Something we focus on daily is fine motor development. Even our littlest learners love to explore with squishy play dough and open ended materials.

Fine motor skills are the small movements of muscles that involve using the hands and fingers together to perform movement. Fine motor skills are movements such as pinching or grasping. These types of movements are important for young children to practice as they develop because they help a child lay the foundation to do everyday tasks such as buttoning a shirt, tying shoe laces, grasping a pencil, using utensils, typing on a keyboard and much more. Fine motor skills can also help develop hand-eye coordination in young children.

If you’d like to help your child practice these skills at home, try one of these 5 simple activities!

1. Play dough
2. Finger painting
3. Pouring rice or beans from container to container
4. Stringing noodles or cereal on string or yarn
5. Dropping pompoms into an empty bottle
