If you want a lure modification that consistently gets bit, try painting the belly of a clear topwater popper with a black Sharpie. It gives the bait a subtle, translucent contrast in the water that works so well on clear lakes.

The topwater bite is starting to turn on as we transition into fall, and Beaver Lake is delivering if you hit the right banks. I threw a custom painted Whopper Plopper along these transition spots and landed one of the better fish I have seen out here in a while.

Here are my top 5 baits for October bass fishing:
1. RAID JAPAN 3.5" Slice Fish on a Drop Shot – Fish this around offshore structure in 20 to 40 feet of water, especially around offshore boulders.
2. Dirty Jigs Tackle Compact Double Willow Spinnerbait – Target windblown banks with flat rock or chunk rock under cloudy skies in clear water.
3. Core Tackle 3/8oz Swim Jig + Boot Tail Trailer – Fish this around shallow offshore grass (hydrilla or milfoil) in 2 to 5 feet of water.
4. Clutch Swimbait Co Baby Boss Glide Bait – Cast this up shallow around flat rock and bluff ends.
5. Megabass of America Vision 110+1 Jerkbait – Fish this around offshore standing timber, brush piles, and stumps in 5 to 12 feet of water anywhere you find baitfish.

Late evening shallow bite turned on as soon as the sun dropped below the tree line. When bass pull into shallow cover this time of year, a topwater frog is one of the most efficient ways to cover water. Threw the SPRO U.S.A Frog on a Denali Rods Gunners Series heavy action rod to handle the thick cover and keep pressure on them once they choked it.
