Why chickens? 🐓🌱

Because at Seeds N Soil Farm and Education Center, we believe our communities should know how to feed themselves.

Inspired by the spirit of Fannie Lou Hamer’s Freedom Farm Cooperative and Pig Bank, we’re asking a bigger question:

What does it actually look like for our communities to build food sovereignty at home?

For us, chickens are one piece of that puzzle.

For Back to the Land, we raised Freedom Rangers—birds bred primarily for meat, but hens can also lay eggs when raised to maturity.

So what if we thought beyond keeping a few chickens just for eggs?

What if our families knew how to raise birds for food?

What if we raised enough to feed our households and share with our neighbors?

What if our youth knew how to raise, harvest and process a chicken—and understood the responsibility of taking life to sustain life?

That’s why Back to the Land was bigger than processing chickens.

We’re preserving land-based knowledge, building practical skills and planting seeds of self-sufficiency and food sovereignty in every home we touch.

thank you to everyone that came out and supported our second community work day . many hands makes hard work easier . with the support from our community we’ve gotten majority of the work done for our nature school . we’re spending the rest of the week finishing up the classroom area and mud kitchens if you’d like to drop in and help send us a message .

This year has given us an opportunity to create new intentional moments of remembrance and to make space for truths that are often left out of the conversation.

Tomorrow we’re opening the farm from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM for a Community Workday.

For us, this isn’t a day to celebrate.
It’s a day to remember.
To honor the land.
To pour libations.
To make offerings.
To put our hands back in the soil.
To have honest conversations about where we’ve been and where we’re’re going. Because food sovereignty isn’t just about growing food. It’s about reclaiming our relationship with the land, with each other, and with the wisdom our ancestors carried.

If you’re spending the day elsewhere, consider creating your own practice of remembrance :
• Begin with a land acknowledgment recognizing the Indigenous peoples who have stewarded the land across generations.
• Pour libations and speak the names of your ancestors, elders, and those whose stories deserve to be remembered.
• Plant something that will feed your family, your neighbors, or the pollinators.
• Volunteer at a community farm, community garden, or food pantry.
• Learn the Indigenous history of the place you call home.
• Support Indigenous, Black, and local farmers by buying directly from them.

Every act of care is a seed.
Every seed is a step toward the future we’re growing together.
