Rockdale Union Stoneware Rockdale Union Stoneware produced salt-glazed stoneware in Cambridge, Wis from 1984-1991, and in Edgerton, Wis. from 1991-1997.

This page is to simply document some of its work, and workers. At its height in the late 80's, early 90's, it employed up to 10 production potters, and 25-30 other workers. All the pots were handthrown on the potter's wheel, and hand decorated in early American inspired motifs.

I’m opening up the archives for our spring studio sale! This is a salt-glazed jar with (what I always called) “flying lugs” that I made in 1989. It has an Albany slip interior and It also features a raised relief sprig decoration celebrating the 5 year anniversary of when I founded Rockdale Union Stoneware. It is inscribed on the bottom with birthday greetings for my grandpa, on his 87th birthday. (He lived to 93!)

A customer of mine just sent me this Etsy listing for an ovoid crock I made in 1984, the year I founded Rockdale Union Stoneware. It was beautifully decorated in the Norton deer pattern by Cynthia Meyers. Cindy worked at Rowe (when I did, ‘82-‘84) and later for many years at Rockdale. She is incredibly talented, and was a master at intricate slip trailing as well as graceful and beautiful brush strokes.

The brown salt glaze happened by mistake in our first six months, when we got a load of clay with higher iron content. We actually tried to offer both grey/blue salt glaze and brown, but couldn’t get the light and toasty brown consistently. Hard to believe that was 42 years ago now!
