Raised on a dairy farm in southwest Canada, I attended private school, then was homeschooled for several years, and then finished in a public high school. Five years later, after starting a family, I began my post-secondary education, and finished with a Master's degree with a focus in Analytical Chemistry. Due to certain bad experiences I had growing up, I had no confidence with math and science.
Only in college, when I started to do well with these subjects, did I realize that the problem wasn't me, it was that I needed a different support system. Once in college, I had several adaptable math and science teachers and utilized tutoring centers when I was stuck, and suddenly everything began to make sense. I learned that for a teacher to teach effectively, said teacher must be able to adapt, to be patient, and to learn to communicate with the needs of individual students, and I learned that different students require different types of support. In addition to math and science, I have extensive experience with history, literature, reading, and writing, as I originally planned to teach history or English. After completing my education I spent time both as a college chemistry instructor and as a materials and process engineer for an aerospace firm, where I also gained much experience in technical writing. This last position I gave up after we had another child, so I became a private tutor. Allow me to assist with your educational or technical writing needs. The same way I was able to learn confidence with math and science thanks to my helpful instructors and solid support system, I hope to provide the same for you or for your children.
