May shared upcoming ASL-interpreted walking tours in Baldwinsville and Newark, all starting at 10:30 AM.
Remaining tour openings include Newark on July 25 and Baldwinsville on August 8
I'm reaching out today to let you know that we still have openings for a couple of our upcoming walking tours, which will be offered with ASL interpretation.
In Baldwinsville, attendees can learn about the early settlers and industries that established themselves in the village along the banks of the Seneca River. A representative of the Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse will talk about the earliest canal to pass through this area and its eventual closure following the opening of the NYS Barge Canal. See the first lock to open on the Barge Canal and learn about what it takes to keep this historic lock in continuous use for over 120 years. ASL interpretive services will be provided by members of AuroraCNY.
This tour will be offered on Saturday, August 8, beginning at 10:30am.
In Newark, learn even more about the construction, maintenance, and functioning of these "living museums" and the lock tenders who care for them. Attendees will learn about the early settlers to the area who came to help build the first iteration of the historic Erie Canal, many of whom chose to remain, establishing the first settlement. This is our most infrastructure-focused tour, led by an Erie Canal Museum representative who will offer guests a broad view of the systems necessary to maintain and operate the locks constructed here to facilitate travel along the various iterations of the Erie Canal. ASL interpretive services will be provided by a member of Interpretek.
