My 12 year old daughter Brooklyn got cut from the modified volleyball team last week.
She told me she didnât really care.
Maybe she didnât. But Iâm her dad. I think she did.
She worked hard for three weeks leading up to tryouts. She got better. She put herself out there. And then she didnât make it.
My instinct as a dad is to try to make it better. Explain it away. Tell her what to do next.
But sometimes kids donât need us to fix it.
Sometimes they just need us to understand that even when they say, âI donât care,â they might.
The same is true for the kids in our classrooms.
Before you get mad at the behavior, get curious about what might be underneath it.
Give her some encouragement đđť. Tell me one set back youâve had in your life that made you better long termđ.
