My 12 year old daughter Brooklyn got cut from the modified volleyball team last week.

She told me she didn’t really care.

Maybe she didn’t. But I’m her dad. I think she did.

She worked hard for three weeks leading up to tryouts. She got better. She put herself out there. And then she didn’t make it.

My instinct as a dad is to try to make it better. Explain it away. Tell her what to do next.

But sometimes kids don’t need us to fix it.

Sometimes they just need us to understand that even when they say, “I don’t care,” they might.

The same is true for the kids in our classrooms.

Before you get mad at the behavior, get curious about what might be underneath it.

Give her some encouragement 👇🏻. Tell me one set back you’ve had in your life that made you better long term🙏.

I want to hear from YOU…

If you’ve ever attended one of my workshops, what’s ONE strategy or idea you heard that you still use today?

Drop it in the comments along with where you saw me👇

Last week was a whirlwind! Huge thank you to everyone in Russellville, OH, Seattle & Pullman, WA, and Ashland & Lewisburg, PA for trusting me to help kick off your school year. I never take it for granted.

“You can’t make me.”

And they’re right.

The second you try to prove that you can, you’ve entered a power struggle.

Don’t take the bait.
Stay calm, take away the battle, and keep the relationship.

What do YOU say when a student tells you, “You can’t make me”?

This year before getting mad at a kid, try feeling sad for them first.

Not because the behavior is ok.

But bc when we start wondering what happened to this kid? Instead of wondering what’s wrong with this kid? It changes how we respond.

We can still hold them accountable.
We can still have boundaries.

We just don’t have to be angry while doing it.

What helps you stay curious instead of mad at?

Two words that can cause arguments: “I need.”

Use these words instead.

Same expectation. Different delivery.

What do you say instead?

You don’t always need the last word. Let the student have it. My last word is usually “thanks.” What’s yours👇🏻?

Teachers hear it a hundred times this time of year:

“Build relationships with your students.”

The problem isn’t that the advice is wrong.

The problem is that too often, nobody actually shows teachers how.

If relationships matter (and they do), let’s stop giving slogans and start giving strategies that can be used tomorrow.

👇 Comment “relationships” and I’ll DM you the most powerful relationship-building strategy I know.

Every statement is another chance to argue.

Every question is a chance to understand.

Curiosity changes conversations.

Thanks for having me. I had the best day 🙏
