Interpreters often mix up medical shorthand and the Rozan Method, but they're built for different things.

Shorthand is premade and standardized, useful because it doesn't require building your own notation system, and it's specific to medical contexts.

The Rozan Method is personal, adaptable to any setting, and built around using as few pen strokes as possible.

Note-taking symbols are most effective when built by the interpreter using them. The challenge is the time it takes to develop a system from scratch.

Part 2 of Memory Skills for Medical Interpreters builds on Part 1's foundation with three practical techniques: a personalized medical shorthand system, mnemonics for retaining drug names and clinical processes, and the memory palace method for organizing and retrieving information through spatial visualization.

The session includes hands-on practice with each technique, giving attendees a memory toolkit built for high-stakes interpreting encounters and certification exam preparation.

Our founder, Marisa Rueda Will, recently had the opportunity to hear directly from LEP patients about their experiences with medical interpretation. With help from her network, she gathered insights from 15 patients.

One theme stood out: accurate interpretation and trust go hand in hand. When patients doubt that everything is being relayed accurately and completely, it breaks down their trust in the encounter and their willingness to open up to their care team.

This is why training matters. Interpreters have one of the most demanding jobs in healthcare, yet the current standard of 40 hours of training prior to certification is only a bare minimum. Research shows that interpreters with 100+ hours of training are significantly less likely to make errors with clinical consequences (Kwan et al., 2023).

For language services managers, this is a reminder of what's at stake in every training decision.

Happy Tica Tuesday! Today's feature is an update on one of our previous spotlights, Sarah Wheeler. She has a few new projects on the horizon that are both practical and innovative. Here's a quick refresher on who she is and what she's been up to the last couple of years.

About Sarah

Sarah Wheeler is a CODA, Air Force veteran, ASL/English interpreter, educator, and researcher with 20 years in the field.

Sarah's work focuses on human judgment, reflective practice, the cognitive and emotional demands of interpreting, and the ways AI is changing the field.

She is currently developing InterpretReflect, a private professional workspace where interpreters can prepare for assignments, reflect afterward, practice deliberately, and think critically about how AI fits into professional practice. InterpretReflect is still in development.

Sarah has also been publishing research-based writing on reflective practice, cognitive load, emotional labor, and human-AI decision-making in interpreting. She recently released I Hate Invoicing, a tool she built after dealing with her own invoicing backlog that helps independent professionals create, send, and track invoices.

What Sarah's Writing About Now

Sarah shared with me that one of the pieces she'd point people to right now is Reflection, Rumination, and the Problem with Self-Blame, which explores the difference between reflection and rumination in interpreting.

It is a thought-provoking piece that highlights the easy tendency for self-reflection to turn into self-blame. It also provides hope about how being compassionate with ourselves may be motivating.
