Happy Tica Tuesday! This week we are celebrating Judith Custodio, a retired medical interpreter whose career is a testament to lifelong dedication to the profession.
Judith earned her CMI credential before hospitals required it, advocated for the Interpreter Bill in Minnesota, and led chapter and association roles with UMTIA and IMIA. She earned her Associate of Applied Science degree in Interpreting and Translation in2017. She retired at 55 but still dedicates 10 to 15 hours a week to bridging communication gaps for those in need.
Her advice to interpreters: prioritize continuing education and protect your emotional well-being. Burnout is real, and small grounding techniques, like moving your toes when you feel overwhelmed during an assignment, can make a big difference.
Judith was nominated by Jacqueline Fattal and Leonor Nava Gomez. Want to nominate someone for a future spotlight? Submit your nomination here: https://forms.gle/p6m7PjPTQDu9Eq2R7

While preparing for my postpartum care webinar, I came across a helpful resource on newborn screening from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. It answers common questions and includes information about genetic testing by state.
https://www.acog.org/womens-health/experts-and-stories/the-latest/8-common-questions-about-newborn-screening-tests
It’s also available in Spanish, which makes it a strong resource if you’re preparing for an exam or getting ready for a postpartum encounter.
If you prefer to learn in a classroom setting and appreciate resources like this, join us this Saturday for a 4-hour performance-based webinar on interpreting for postpartum care.
Two of my good friends, Joanna and Brianna, share their postpartum care journeys to put what we learn into context.
You will get:
-Access to the recording
-PDF of slides
-Certificate of attendance
-200-word postpartum care glossary in EN/ES and EN/LOTE
-Performance-based interpreter training

✔ Aplicaremos ejemplos a situaciones reales
Si no puedes asistir en vivo, puedes registrarte para recibir la grabación.

I believe in being the change you want to see in healthcare interpreting.
Every day I worked as a medical interpreter, I came home knowing I made a difference. Healthcare interpreting is my calling. The work that is done to preserve a patient’s autonomy and voice while navigating a complex healthcare system in another language is incredibly difficult.
What stands out to me is that sometimes, the work I did outside of interpreting messages, sharing institutional and cultural knowledge, reading body language, and showing compassion in moments of anguish, were the most valuable parts of my work.
These are the tasks I refer to as “hidden.”
It is time to shine a spotlight on them and share more about the work healthcare interpreters do every day to promote language access.
I am currently conducting a research study on how interpreters support communication and patient care beyond language interpretation, and I am looking for perspectives from three groups:
Medical interpreters:

Healthcare providers:
https://forms.gle/C5EvC8q4hvtGM5CS6
Spanish-speaking patients:
https://forms.gle/tuBt7yauykpCVRvX7
Each survey takes about 20 minutes and will be open for 3 weeks.
If you are part of one of these groups, I would truly value your participation. If not, I would appreciate you sharing this with your networks.

I wanted to share a quick heads up.
Today is the last day to get the Language Pharmacy Bundle at $119 before the price increases.
These courses were all delivered live last year, with interpreters working through real clinical scenarios, terminology challenges, and decision-making in the moment.
Now, it’s all available on demand.
Inside the bundle:
• 12 on-demand courses (12 CEUs)
• Medication terminology across specialties
• Real patient scenarios and interpreting practice
• 200-term glossaries for each specialty (EN/SP + EN/LOTE)
“Marisa's enthusiasm about medical interpreting is absolutely contagious… Her lessons are engaging, full of practical tips, and make the work feel relevant and purposeful.”
— Claudia, Spanish Interpreter
If you have been looking for a way to build confidence with medications and specialty encounters, this was designed for that.
Today is the final day at this price.
