It is with deep sorrow and heartfelt sympathy that we share the passing of Mrs. Pamela Peay, beloved wife of Gen. J.H. Binford Peay III ’62, VMI’s 14th superintendent.
Mrs. Peay was a gracious, devoted, and steadfast presence whose warmth and strength touched countless members of the VMI family. Throughout Gen. Peay’s distinguished service to the Institute, she stood as a valued partner supporting cadets; welcoming alumni; and embodying the spirit of honor, service, and commitment that defines VMI.
Those who had the privilege of knowing Mrs. Peay will remember her for her warmth, her dignity, and her genuine care for others. She carried herself with grace, leaving a profound and lasting impact. She uplifted those around her and helped strengthen the enduring sense of community that defines VMI.
On behalf of the VMI Alumni Agencies, we extend our deepest condolences to Gen. Peay and the Peay family, including Jim Peay ’98 and Ryan Peay ’02. We honor Mrs. Peay’s life, her unwavering devotion, and the legacy of compassion and strength she leaves behind.
Her memory will remain a lasting part of the VMI story and in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Honoring the Fallen – VMI Alumni Who Gave the Ultimate Sacrifice
Today, we pause to remember the brave men and women of the Virginia Military Institute who answered the call to serve—and gave everything in defense of our nation.
From the storied grounds of Lexington to battlefields around the world, VMI alumni have long embodied honor, duty, and sacrifice. These individuals did not just wear the uniform—they lived the values instilled in them as cadets, placing service above self.
Their courage secured the freedoms we enjoy today. Their legacy lives on in the Rat Line, in the Corps of Cadets, and in every alumnus who continues to carry forward the VMI spirit.
We honor their memory. We carry their legacy. We will never forget.
“In pace decus, in bello praesidium”
(In peace, a glorious asset; in war, a tower of strength.)
