Cooking with your child is more than a fun family activity—it can also support reading skills in a natural, meaningful way.

When kids help in the kitchen, they practice:

🍴 Reading directions in order
🍴 Following multi-step instructions
🍴 Learning new vocabulary like mix, measure, sprinkle, whisk, and simmer
🍴 Connecting words to real actions
🍴 Building sequencing skills: first, next, then, last
🍴 Noticing measurements, labels, and ingredient names

Recipes are a great way to show children that reading has a purpose. They are not just reading words on a page—they are using those words to make something real.

For the parent who has tried everything…

What is one word your child always misreads or misspells?

Sometimes the best reading and spelling “tricks” work because they give the brain something to notice, connect, and remember. A tricky word becomes easier when a child has a story, pattern, picture, movement, or meaning attached to it.

Looking for an easy way to make review more fun?

Grab some sticky notes and a Nerf gun, slingshot toy, or even a soft ball. On each sticky note, write whatever skill you want to review:

phonemes
vocabulary words
parts of speech
morphemes
spelling patterns

Then ask your child a question and let them aim for the answer!

“Which phoneme makes the /sh/ sound?”
“Which word is a synonym for big?”
“Beautiful is what part of speech?”
“Which word has a suffix?”

This simple activity adds movement and excitement while still giving your child meaningful practice.

Learning does not always have to happen at a desk. Sometimes the best review happens when kids are moving, laughing, and fully engaged.

“The hardest part of reading homework at our house is ______.”

Is it getting started?
Staying focused?
Sounding out words without frustration?
Remembering what was just read?
Feeling tired before the book even opens?

We know every family’s reading journey looks different. For some children, reading homework is quick and easy. For others, it can feel like a daily battle filled with big emotions, guessing, avoidance, or tears.
