✨Tip Thursdays! ✨💡
Rewarding Independence and making your kiddo more self sufficient!
When we see our child engaging in independent behaviors, it is crucial to reinforce them!
These behaviors are more likely to take place again in the future if reinforced!

Challenge Them!
If your child is capable of doing a task, provide them with as many opportunities as you can to have them practice that skill.

Don’t Give in to Behaviors!
Challenging behaviors can happen in an attempt to escape a task. You should ignore the challenging behaviors while still making sure that your child completes the task instead of escaping it.

The more you know!

Shaping behavior, or “shaping”, occurs when you reinforce successive approximations of a desired behavior.

This paves the way for a larger new skill to take shape.

An example of this is when a baby learns to walk. We tend to reinforce each step of the process- crawling, standing, single steps, and then walking.

It is crucial that praise and reinforcement for each step be implemented to make room for larger skills!

The number one question that parent’s tend to ask us is “WHY?”
•”Why is he acting this way?”
•”Why is she hitting her friends?”
•”Why won’t she stop screaming?”

We are here to explain why this happens, but it’s important to understand the significance of the ABC’s of behavior. All behavior has a predictable pattern.

A= Antecedent. Anything that happens right before the behavior. An example to this would be, “Anytime he is asked to share, he…”

B= Behavior. This is what the child does as a reaction to the the preceding event. “Child hits/yells/fidgets as a result.”

C= Consequences. Happens directly after the behavior. This can be due to wanting attention, access to something, or simply because it feels good.

So, what do we do?
In simpler terms, we prompt!
By prompting, we are reinforcing proper requests and behavior for the future!

In summary, understanding behaviors will help us identify the antecedents (triggers) and consequences (how we responded) in our everyday actions. We encourage you to take notes on the ABCs of behavior for your child!
