Unless you want to stand, hose in hand, the entire year, please read the following free advice. Watering our landscapes is the most important investment we make in their health and vitality. Not having an effective sprinkler system is time consuming, inconvenient, and costly. Water, in sufficient qualities, along with fertilizer, is the primary way to acheive vitality and growth in our gardens. Even the least skilled gardeners are aware that most plants will not survive without consistent waterings. From 30 years of hands on experience, I have listed the following guidelines to make this year the most hassle free, cost efficient, user-friendly landscape-sprinkler experience you have ever imagined. Wise gardeners give their plants the amount of water that each one needs at times and in increments most appropriate to each aspect of the landscape. This results in a huge savings through decreased water costs. In Southern California, the heat alone necessitates enough water without increasing the needs through watering at ineffective times or in inappropriate quanities. Consequently, we should not water during the day because the sun evaporates the moisture. We should always avoid night watering, because this causes an abundance of insects, pest, and other landscape critters that prey on the very plants we are seeking to nurture and protect. The ideal time to water is in the early morning, between 4:00 and 6 am. Infrequent, deep soakings will prove most effective for the majority of trees, plants, vines, bushes, hedges, and other landscape plants. Lawn areas, flowers, and other color plantings will require more frequent watering. Consequently, the sprinkler zones should be split and seperate to allocate different quatities of moisture to the different areas of the landscape. On many properties, large amounts of water are wasted on areas that have smaller requirements, while other more needy areas go thirsty. Modern advances in sprinkler technologies have also made it much easier for us to specialize in our applications, putting the water exactly where we want it, in appropriate quantities. Another important consideration is the quality of the products you have installed in your property. The cost of your time, your technician's time, or of replacing damaged or destroyed plantings is too expensive to skimp a little on the price of materials. Unfortunately many property owners have only been familiar with the type of sprinkler parts available in a home improvement center or other retail store where the focus is on price as opposed to quality. I have found that most of these timers, valves, heads, and other accessories have an average life span of only a few years. In watering systems, dependability is the name of the game. When you find yourself too busy to check on things or away on travel, it will serve you well to have parts working for you that come with a 5 year warranty from the manufacturer. Coverage problems are a constant complaint of property owners. An area not receiving water will be damaged and eventually die. Pressure loss is another common dilemma we see in specific areas or affecting the entire sprinkler system. Pressure problems make adequate watering impossible, even with numerous adjustments and accommodations. For the skilled technician, such trouble-shooting problems are easy to identify and resolve. Emergency repairs are a common concern in Southern California. To avoid inconveniences and liabilities, install a shut off valve. This will allow you to turn the water off to the sprinkler system without shutting off your house water. Dean Teague, a 25 + year landscape industry veteran, founded Teague Landscape Co., a privately owned family business. Azaleas in the landscape...No other flowering shrub has contributed more to the American garden than the azalea when one considers that, by proper selection of varieties, color can be had from October through June. Azaleas can be used in mass plantings or spotlighted as single specimens. They can be shaped as bushes, hedges or trees. They thrive in hanging baskets and decorated pots, and some varieties are very popular for bonsai. The versatility of this plant is unlimited. However, most azaleas are at there best when planted in groups or drifts. An ideal situation for them would be among high trees so spaced to allow the sun and light to pe*****te yet providing intervals of shade to give the plants some respite from the hot sun. Where there are not trees, the north or east side of the house or high fence would be desirable. Many azaleas do thrive in full sun, notably the Southern Indicas.

During Winter, diciduous trees are bare. With their entire branch structure visible, it becomes much easier to identify weak branch connections, cracks in limbs and dead wood. Pruning to remove these branches in winter can avoid serious future damage while improving the health and strength of trees. The cold climate also means there are far fewer insects or disease pathogens around to effect the newly trimmed areas.
