Well, well, well…nothing like a change of scenery to sweep a problem under the rug! Eastern New Mexico University - ENMU - DO THE RIGHT THING & PROTECT YOUR STUDENT-ATHLETES!!!!

Hey, gang…so, all the defendants have filed their Answers to the lawsuit. It’s about what I expected, admitting to basic facts like the women were students & members of the basketball team. They denied pretty much everything else & said the women failed to state a case & asked that it be thrown out (pretty much boilerplate lawyer language). Not surprising, it’s how most defendants answer civil suits, but it’s still disheartening because all the defendants are denying the women’s trauma. One interesting thing, the coach admitted that her husband treated them in the home, but claimed the players requested it. So, victim-blaming. She also admitted that Paul Weir knew the players were treated by her husband in their home. She also admitted that there was a camera in their home that may have captured some of the treatment sessions. They admit that a meeting with Weir & the coach & her husband happened in Nov 2022 but deny there was any mention of sexual assault. All of them object to the women proceeding anonymously. And they all claim that ENMU (and thus the others) did not waive immunity. As a state institution, you’re only allowed to sue the state under certain circumstances. There’s also a scheduling order that basically just sets a date to discuss preliminary discovery schedule. No trial date yet.

I’ll give Northwestern this much…when they realized they were too lenient, they reversed course. For a coach who fought tooth & nail to prevent his players from unionizing, he clearly didn’t treat them like the “family” he claimed they were.

ENMU Athletics is using women’s basketball players to make a pitch for donors to the program. I tell you what, how about you first, making sure they are on an abuse-free environment with an AD who takes the job seriously and THEN we’ll talk about donations.

ENMU definitely needs to learn some lessons!
