For Su***de Prevention & Awareness Month, our Counseling & Wellness Department wanted to do something a little different to bring awareness to the importance of connection, kindness, and checking in on one another. We never truly know what someone else may be carrying, and sometimes a small moment of support can make a bigger difference than we realize.

Throughout the day, we offered 20 second hugs and encouraging affirmations for anyone who preferred not to hug. Research suggests that 20 second hugs or longer can support the release of oxytocin, a hormone connected to bonding and stress reduction. Whether it was a hug, an affirmation, or simply taking a moment to connect, the message was the same: YOU MATTER, AND YOU ARE NOT ALONE. This month and every month, check on your people, lead with kindness, and help others feel seen, valued, and supported.❤️

If you or someone you know is struggling, reach out to a trusted adult or submit a referral for support; you do not have to go through it alone. You can also call or text 988 to reach the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline, a free, confidential crisis-support service available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The 988 Lifeline is a national resource and is not affiliated with our school.

FROM CRISTO REY RICHMOND HIGH SCHOOL TO COLLEGE: OUR ROYALS ARE SEEING WHAT'S POSSIBLE!

Recently, our sophomores, juniors, and seniors stepped onto college campuses across Virginia—and each visit brought new opportunities to learn, connect, and envision what comes next.

🏛️ Sophomores at Longwood University
Our sophomores immersed themselves in the college experience, including an engaging mock class with Dr. Paige that challenged and energized our scholars. They also enjoyed reconnecting with Tyisha and Danielle, Class of 2023, who are on track to earn their degrees in May 2027. Their journey is a powerful reminder of the persistence, growth, and possibilities that extend well beyond the halls of Cristo Rey.

🕷️ Juniors at the University of Richmond
Our juniors connected with Kellys, Class of 2025 and now a thriving Bonner Scholar Spider, before exploring campus life and learning more about the college experience. Seeing a Cristo Rey alum thriving on campus made the possibilities feel tangible—and reminded our scholars that their own college dreams are within reach.

🎓 Seniors at the University of Virginia
Our seniors experienced UVA’s academic environment firsthand, meeting with James Bland, Director of the Center for Connection in Engineering, and a panel of STEM students who shared valuable insight on succeeding in college. They also connected with Felipe, Class of 2026, who offered an inside look at life as a UVA student.

From classroom experiences to conversations with Cristo Rey alumni, these visits gave our Royals more than a glimpse of college—they gave them a vision for what’s possible. ✨

THE JOURNEY STARTS AT CRISTO REY RICHMOND HIGH SCHOOL. THE POSSIBILITIES ARE LIMITLESS!

Visit www.cristoreyrichmond.org to learn more. Applications open on October 1st, 2026.
