Four years ago. Same me. A life I was only beginning to imagine. 🤍

I was starting immersion week for my Master’s in Applied Positive Psychology at Penn. We were encouraged to step away from our normal routines and create space to fully immerse ourselves in the learning.

So I rented a little Airbnb in downtown Sarasota.

My husband moved me in—and packed my grandparents’ old hand painted picnic basket with food, snacks, and little comforts from home.

But that basket carried so much more than food.

Growing up, it came with us on weekend boat trips to the beach, packed with fried chicken and Pizza Lady pizza. Some of my most cherished memories are wrapped up in that basket.

Family. Sunshine. Connection. Belonging.

Looking back, those weekends were positive psychology interventions at their finest.

Long before I knew the research, I knew what it felt like to thrive.

And there I was decades later, with that same basket beside me, studying the science behind those experiences—and dreaming about how I might bring it into organizations.

How I might work with leaders and teams to ask a different question:

Not just, “How do we get people to perform?”

But, “How do we create the conditions for people to thrive AND perform sustainably?”

Four years later, I get to do the work I was sitting at this counter dreaming about.

And I found this photo completely by accident—while looking for a picture of a broken window at our Connecticut house that we now Airbnb. Another part of my current life I’m not sure this version of me would have predicted. 😊

Research on nostalgia suggests that meaningful memories can strengthen connection, meaning, and our sense of continuity between who we were and who we are becoming.

And research on savoring reminds us of the value of intentionally noticing and appreciating the good.

Maybe that’s why this photo stopped me.

We spend so much time looking toward what’s next that we can miss what has already happened:

Some of the things you once dreamed about have quietly become your life.

Today, I’m pausing long enough to notice.

And to savor it. 🤍

The Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce team came together this week for our 2026 Annual Retreat: Full Speed Ahead: Tuning the Team for High Performance.

Building on last year's work aligning our strategic pillars and this spring's focus on individual mindset, this retreat tackled a bigger question: how do we operate as one high-performance team, not just a collection of strong individual contributors?

The day drew on research in goal-setting, team coordination, and organizational learning to move us from talk to action. Highlights included:

Translating our core values into observable, everyday behaviors (our "Racing Code")
A hands-on paper chain exercise that revealed the real difference between activity and coordination
Introducing the Four Frames: Structural, Human Resource, Political, and Symbolic, as a way to diagnose challenges before jumping to solutions
Drafting our first collective Team KRAs, moving beyond individual scorecards to shared accountability
Committing to a "Checkered Flag Debrief" process so we learn from every event, not just repeat it

We closed the morning with a clear line of sight from mission to values to team goals to individual action and a shared belief that high performance isn't about driving faster alone. It's about knowing the race we're trying to win and running it together.

In episode 5 "When wellbeing becomes a team sport" Coach Kristen highlights "The idea of mattering by adding value and being valued in the work environment."

Most work environments are quick to notice what goes wrong—but what if we shift our focus to what goes right? 🧠✨

Strength-spotting isn't just a compliment; it’s a culture booster. When you explicitly name the strengths you see in your teammates, you build a deep sense of validation and mattering—the feeling that they add real value and are valued for who they are.

Next time you notice a colleague doing something great, call it out directly. Small callouts build strong teams! 💬👇

How do you highlight strengths in your workspace?
