Connection before correction does not mean no correction.

Let me say that again for the people in the back. 😂

Young people still need expectations. Boundaries matter. Accountability matters. Consequences can matter too.

But I have learned that correction lands differently when it comes from someone you trust.

Think about it.

We are all more open to feedback from someone who knows us, listens to us, sees the good in us, and has shown us that they are genuinely for us.

Young people are no different.

Connection is not being soft.

Connection gives the correction somewhere to land.

Whether you are parenting a teenager, teaching a class, coaching a team, supervising young adults, or leading a youth program, relationship is not extra.

It is part of the strategy.

Where have you seen connection completely change the outcome of a difficult conversation?

09/04/2026

Get it in where you can fit it in. 😂💙

Who said date night has to happen at night?

With two teenagers, two businesses, work, programs, school activities, and everything else that comes with this season of life, sometimes you have to stop waiting for the perfect time to connect and use the time you actually have.

So while the girls were doing their thing, Curtis and I slipped away for a Saturday day date at PlantHouse.🌱It’s a DIY terrarium experience. Thanks for the tip!

We picked our plants, got our hands in some soil, added our own creative touches, enjoyed a cocktail, laughed, talked, and walked out with two beautiful pieces for our home.

Simple. Fun. Exactly what we needed.

I talk a lot about connection through Unbreakable Minds, and that includes the connection between the adults holding the family together too.

Do not wait until the calendar clears because chile... it may never clear. 😂

Find the pocket. Protect the time. Enjoy each other. 💙

What is one simple date idea you have enjoyed lately?

Before you correct the behavior, get curious about what it may be communicating.

A young person gets quiet. Irritable. Disengaged. Defensive. Suddenly the attitude is attitudeing. 😮‍💨

Our first instinct as adults can be to correct what we see.

But sometimes the behavior is only the part we can see.

There may be stress underneath it. Fear. Embarrassment. Feeling left out. Pressure. Exhaustion. Or simply not knowing how to explain what is going on.

Connection does not mean ignoring inappropriate behavior or removing expectations.
It means getting enough information to respond to the young person, not just the behavior.

Try asking:
💙 What happened?
💙 What do you need right now?
💙 How can I support you while we figure this out?

Those three questions can completely change the tone of a conversation.

Parents, educators, coaches, mentors, and youth professionals, sometimes the strongest intervention is curiosity before correcting.

Try one of these questions this week. Which one do you think would open the best conversation with a young person in your life?

College students do not stop needing support just because they made it to campus.

For some young adults, these first few weeks of school are exciting. For others, they are quietly trying to figure out independence, pressure, relationships, academics, money, identity, loneliness, confidence, and the question everybody keeps asking:

What’s next? What are you going to do with your life?

That is a lot to carry while you are still learning yourself.

One thing I want young adults to hear from me this semester is this:
You do not have to have your entire life figured out because you picked a major.
College is not only preparation for what you will do.
It is also part of discovering who you are, what matters to you, what you value, and how you want to show up in this world.
Give yourself permission to learn both.

🎓 Student affairs leaders, college access programs, wellness teams, first year programs, and campus organizations, if your students need conversations around mindset, confidence, purpose, transition, and emotional wellness, bring Coach Yolanda to your campus.

📩 Let’s create something your students will actually remember.

Still in the Parenting on Purpose afterglow… and this reel tells the story💙

We came together to eat, laugh, reflect, connect, and have some REAL conversations about parenting and family life. The World Café conversations were a highlight because parents were not just receiving information… they were sharing experiences, learning from one another, and helping shape the conversation.

And the feedback so far says a lot… participants want to stay connected to Unbreakable Minds and Parenting on Purpose, and 100% of those who responded said they would attend another experience. 🙌🏾

This is what intentional parent engagement can look like… creating spaces where parents feel welcomed, valued, supported, and part of the solution.

We are grateful for every parent who showed up, every new family who joined our community, and every partner who helped make the experience possible.

Schools and organizations looking for meaningful ways to engage and strengthen families… let’s talk. Parenting on Purpose can come to your community too. 💙

I’m excited to share that I have been selected as a 2026 100 Women of Color Virginia Honoree! 👑💙

This recognition celebrates women whose leadership, service, and impact are making a difference throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia, and I am truly honored to be counted among this year’s 100 women.

What makes this moment even sweeter is that earlier this year, I celebrated my husband, Curtis, as a 100 Men of Color Virginia Honoree… and now here we are. 🥹❤️

As I looked through this incredible group of women, I saw so many familiar faces… women I have worked with, served alongside, learned from, and watched make a difference in our communities. I’m excited and humbled to share the stage with them.

For more than 25 years, my work has centered around young people, families, education, prevention, leadership, and helping people recognize the strength and possibility already within them. To have that body of work recognized in this way means so much.

A heartfelt thank you to the person who nominated me… whoever you are! ❤️ I’m looking forward to finding out who you are so I can thank you personally. And thank you to the 100 Women of Color Virginia Gala & Awards Committee for this incredible recognition.

I’m grateful for everyone who has been part of this journey. This moment belongs to all of us. 💙 100 Women. 100 Stories. 100 Examples of Impact.

We’re growing, and the right people matter.

As Coach Curtis and I prepare for the next season of Crown Movement and the continued growth of Unbreakable Minds, we are being intentional about the people we invite to help carry the vision.

We are currently looking for:
👑 Crown Movement Lead Coaches
👑 Crown Movement Assistant Coaches
👑 Crown Movement Coach Intern

But we are not simply looking for people who can complete tasks or stand in front of a group.

We need people who connect.
People who listen.
People who understand that young people need to feel seen before they will allow you to influence them.
People who believe excellence and compassion can exist in the same room.
And people who want their work to mean something.

Skills matter. Character matters. Connection matters.

If that sounds like you, or somebody immediately came to mind while you were reading this, we want to hear from you.

📩 Visit https://unbreakableminds.org/job-opportunities for information about our current opportunities, and please share this post with someone who belongs in this work.

I’m truly honored to be 1 of the 100 and grateful to be part of something so powerful. The collective impact of this group is incredible! It blows my mind to think about how much change, leadership, service, and inspiration will be represented in one room!
What an honor it will be to share the stage with all of them.
100 STRONG💪🏾❤🙌🏾
