With all of the hustle and bustle that the last week of school brings, today we wanted to slow down and honor these four amazing women as they head off into retirement. As we say goodbye to our second grade teacher Mrs. Amy Thurston, our school counselor Ms. She'ron Fields, our Exceptional Education teacher Ms. Victoria Purdy, and our Office Associate Ms. Tawana Gilyard, we want to say thank you for all of the students that you have helped here at Barack Obama Elementary and in your careers. The impact you have made is tremendous and you will be missed. We love you and thank you for everything!

Congratulations to our fantastic 5th graders as they move on to this next stage of their education. We love you so much and we are so proud of the young people you have become! Thank you to all of the teachers, family members and community members who have helped you get to this point in your lives. We thank the BOES choir their beautiful song of encouragement, and to all of the staff and guest speakers who made this such a lovely moving on ceremony. Good luck 5th grade...you will be missed!

The weather made us pivot to an indoor experience, but these beautiful smiles make it seem like they had a good time anyway! Congratulations to our amazing first graders and their wonderful performance in "Squirm- The Musical!" We are so proud of the hard work you put in and the nerves you overcame to delight the audience on Thursday. You should be very proud of yourselves!

Special shoutout to Mrs. Wilborn, our music teacher, for the talent and patience it took to put this musical together- no easy feat! Also big kudos to Mrs. Bahari, our art teacher, for the beautiful worms, spiders, bats, and snakes that were created for the show.

Wow! What a treat it was last night to see our Harp, Band, Orchestra, and Star Singers Choir perform at their Spring Concert. It was so beautiful to hear the hard work and dedication and such wonderful music from our Barack Obama Elementary musicians.

A special thank you goes out to our four BOES music teachers- we know the staggering amount of time and effort it takes to put on a concert such as this. So, thank you Mr. Grimes (band), Mrs. Barry (orchestra), Mrs. Dechent (harp) and Ms. Wilborn (BOES music teacher/choir director)

Barack Obama Elementary School was accepted into the 2026-2027 Disney Musicals in Schools: STAGE CONNECT program! This program is designed to enhance performing art programs in public elementary schools through the magic of theatre! Out of 829 applications, and 388 finalists, our school was selected as one of the 200 awarded schools in the country to receive online training, showkit materials and resources, and performance rights to direct our first Disney musical!

We are charged with the honor to produce a Disney musical show this coming school year in Spring of 2027! 3rd - 5th grade students will experience the thrill of auditioning for a school play, rehearsing with peers, learning choreography and acting techniques; as well as diving into technical production, costume design and prop making!

Disney's goal is to give schools the resources needed to create a thriving theatre program that will last for many years. With this opportunity, Barack Obama Elementary School will strengthen their performing arts culture, and further celebrate the many talents of our scholars and the community that supports them.

We are so grateful to have been selected for this program. Our teachers are eager to learn alongside their students, and see what it takes to put on a musical! We will announce our spring musical show and details for auditioning in Fall of 2026!
