Robin Rothenberg
interviewed by Alice Bentley

This book offers an educational guide for yoga teachers and therapists to assess pranayama techniques in the context of the physiologic impact they have on the body. This well-researched text provides insight into how dysregulated breathing patterns can negatively impact not just the respiratory system, but all the systems, throw off our pH, and limit our capacity to think clearly.
In addition to the deep dive into the western science of respiratory physiology, Restoring Prana also references many of the ancient yoga texts regarding pranayama. One of the most startling revelations Robin made in her research is that pranayama refers to kumbhaka – the state of breath suspension and or retention, not the movement of inhalation and exhalation. The capacity to extend kumbhakha provides the practitioner with the many health benefits associated with consistent practice. Robin then helps us understand that the only way we can actually increase our capacity to suspend the breath is by training ourselves to breathe less not more. She warns that the popular trend of big breathing in yoga classes takes us in the opposite direction of true pranayama, and can compromise our health leading to further imbalance.

The model focuses on five key elements, with panchamaya kosha at the center:
• Panchamaya Kosha - the ancient yoga therapy system
• The Gunas - the yogic and Ayurvedic concept that there are three universal qualities of rajas, tamas, and sattva
• Fundamental Movements - a modern somatic psychology concept that aligns with both Panchamaya Kosha and Attachment Theory
• Phase-Based Treatment - a trauma-informed approach to clinical care
• Community Care and Self-Care - we hold the value that yoga professionals must take care of themselves to be good caregivers to others
Yoga Therapy for Complex Trauma covers three distinct age groups - children, adolescents, and adults - and offers an evidence-informed approach to providing yoga specifically for CPTSD.

Yoga Therapy for Arthritis: A Whole-Person Approach to Movement and Lifestyle
Yoga therapy is commonly used for the management of arthritis, but often focuses exclusively on adaptation of the physical poses and on structural solutions. This book moves beyond the traditional routines to present yoga as a lifestyle designed to improve quality of life and overall well-being for individuals living with arthritis and rheumatic conditions. By incorporating the ancient practices of yoga as both physical and mental exercises involving a model of 5-koshas or sheaths (physical, energetic, mental/emotional, wisdom, and spiritual), the yoga therapy practice presented here will help reduce pain and shift the perspective of the individual living with arthritis. This therapy uses a whole-person approach that employs a broad range of tools to address the biopsychosocial effects of arthritis through the application of yoga practices and philosophy. Useful as a guide for people living with arthritis, this book is full of inspiration for self-care along with instructions for yoga teachers and medical professionals to guide their clients using this whole-person perspective. https://happy-back-yoga.teachable.com/p/the-yoga-therapy-book-club

Yoga Therapy: A Whole Person Approach to Health by Lee Majewski and Dr. Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani.

Author Spotlight
Nov. 18, 1-2:30 pm EST
Lee Majewski & Dr. Ananda Balayogi Bhavani
interviewed by Rachel Krentzman author of As IS: A Memoir on Healing the Past Through Yoga

In this book, Lee Majewski and Ananda Bhavanani define yoga and yoga therapy as a whole person practice, demonstrating how it can help the individual to heal through their own mechanisms. The authors bring yogic concepts from theory into everyday life, exploring how yoga therapy can work with all levels of a human being at the same time (physical, energetic, emotional, intellectual and spiritual) and demonstrating that, when applied correctly, it can assist healing and facilitate an improved quality of life.
The book covers deep yogic work and how it applies to cancer patients, as well as a range of other chronic conditions including respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. For each of these conditions the authors explore how yoga therapy can go beyond alleviating symptoms and work to heal the whole person.
