"I did go to kindergarten, and then after that, I went to boarding school for 5 and a half years. I came home because of the pandemic and then everyone was in online school. Then I just stayed. I am a senior, going to be graduating in about 2 months.

My favorite part of online school is it's flexible for me and my schedule. I don't have to wake up super early. I don't have to dress up a lot. I wake up. I walk my dog, eat breakfast. Mondays, 8:30 AM is my first class because that's homeroom. Then all the other days it starts at 9:15 AM, so I can have a little bit more time with my dog and just hang out.

I'm taking Gothic literature. It's fascinating. You get to dive into mysteries and hear why the villain is doing what he's doing. It catches you in the moment so you just keep on reading because you don't want to miss the good parts. 'Frankenstein' was a really good book. I also read 'The Lord of Rings.' It's mysterious and there are heroes trying to save the world, and I love that. I'm also really interested in romance.

When I'm in class and there's a little bit of time to talk, if I see something interesting, then I might chime in. Usually, I don't chat that much. I'm mostly doing homework. Sometimes I do chat with my teachers about how their day was or if there's a book that someone mentioned, then I might chime in.

You can just do [your work] on your own time. There's classes every day, but it's not the same classes. They switch on and off. They're 45 minutes and I can take a break and do something else — that's really helpful too. They record all the sessions. So you can go back and watch the recordings and do your homework. The teachers are really good, just email them and they'll help you. I really recommend it, not just for your physical health but emotionally as well."

As a 10th-grade English teacher at iQ Academy California–Los Angeles (iQLA), Ms. Papadopoulos knows that students learn best when they feel heard and supported. With a background in English literature and theater, she brings creativity, discussion, and encouragement into her lessons, helping students engage with literature while building confidence and communication skills.

“I’ve always been a big proponent of gamified learning, which is hands-on, and now I’m just doing that virtually."

For Ms. Papadopoulos, the online classroom also creates opportunities for students who may be hesitant to participate in a traditional classroom setting.

"There is a little bit more of that anonymity with the kids. We’re not face to face all the time, and I feel like it’s easier to create a safe space here between student and teacher. I had a student who rarely participated in class but started answering questions just to me in the chat. A few weeks later, he was responding so the whole class could see. It was so cool to go to his parents and say, ‘He’s opening up.’"

One student’s journey reinforced for Ms. Papadopoulos just how meaningful those connections can be. After supporting a student who was struggling academically, she saw him complete enough work to graduate.

My family chose K12 because we wanted our daughter to continue learning from home while spending more quality time together and enjoying the flexibility the program offers.
