Some of the most memorable retirement conversations we've been part of weren't about numbers at all. They were about what people actually wanted their days to look like. The numbers are just the part we can help with. The vision has to come from you.

Independence Day weekend. A good time to think about what financial independence actually means to you — not as an abstract goal, but in practical terms. The ability to make choices without being constrained by money. To give. To rest. To go. That's what a good retirement plan is actually building toward.

July in the Pacific Northwest. There's nowhere else quite like it. If part of what you're planning for is the ability to actually be here — present, unhurried, with the people you love — then the financial part is just the groundwork. Worth getting right.

Legacy looks different for everyone. For some people it's financial — what they leave to their children or grandchildren, the charity they've supported for decades. For others it's time and presence. Most people, when they're honest about it, want both. A good retirement plan makes room for that.

Something we've noticed about people who feel more prepared for retirement: they tend to have thought clearly about what they're retiring to, not just what they're retiring from. The financial piece supports the life piece. Both matter.

What's the thing you're most looking forward to having time for?

Retirement isn't a finish line — it's a beginning. The transition from accumulating to actually living off what you've built is one of the bigger mental and financial shifts most people will make. Having a plan for that transition, not just for the years leading up to it, makes all the difference.

There's a kind of quiet that comes with knowing your finances are in order. Not excitement, not relief exactly — just the ability to be present. To be at the dinner table without the low hum of money worry in the background. That's what good planning actually buys you.

If you're age 70½ or older and give to charity, a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) may allow you to donate directly from your IRA without the distribution being included in your taxable income, subject to IRS rules and annual limits.

Because QCDs may help reduce adjusted gross income, they can also affect other areas of retirement planning, including Medicare premiums and the taxation of Social Security benefits.

The Pacific Northwest has a way of putting things in perspective. There's something about being outside — really outside, not just passing through — that reminds you what you're actually working toward. Good retirement planning is really just clearing the path to more of that.

What's your favorite spot in the Pacific Northwest?

Medicare premiums aren't a fixed cost for everyone. If your income crosses certain thresholds in retirement, you'll pay more — sometimes significantly more. It's called IRMAA, and it can be triggered by things like a Roth conversion or a one-time asset sale, even if your income is typically modest. Knowing it exists is the first step to planning around it.
