Mosquitoes, ticks and yellowjackets were all part of the job for biotechnology student Zain Imtiaz Syed this summer.

Through internships with our Associate Professor, Monika Gulia-Nuss's laboratory and the Placer Mosquito & Vector Control District, Zain gained valuable hands-on experience in vector biology.

Throughout the summer, Zain collected mosquito, yellowjacket and tick samples in the field before identifying species in the lab, extracting DNA and conducting PCR assays to detect pathogens. His work contributed to ongoing research focused on understanding disease vectors and the pathogens they carry, while giving him the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in real-world research settings.

Hands-on experiences like these prepare our students to make an impact in research, public health and beyond!
