The Sierra Nevada Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience (SNCSfN) was formed in 2008 by Neuroscienti It is formally chartered by the Society for Neuroscience.

Neuroscientists in Nevada have diverse backgrounds ranging from molecular biology to behavior to clinical specialties. This chapter brings them together by hosting local meetings, facilitating attendance at the annual international Society for Neuroscience meeting, and organizing local educational public outreach activities. Membership is open to all Neuroscientists and those with an interest in n

Help send our Nevada Brain Bee Winner to Nationals, organized by We Study Brains 03/28/2024

Dear Nevada Community,

We are reaching out on behalf of the Northern Nevada Brain Bee, an educational initiative aimed at fostering a greater understanding of neuroscience among high-achieving high school students interested in the brain in our region. The Northern Nevada Brain Bee is an integral part of Brain Awareness Week (BAW), a global initiative launched in 1996 by the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) and the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives. BAW's mission is to increase awareness of neuroscience in the general community, and it is celebrated in countries worldwide, traditionally in March.

The Brain Bee competition targets high achieving high school students. It operates on a three-tiered structure, consisting of local, national, and international competitions, and is celebrated in more than 50 countries! Each year, within each participating country, there are numerous Local (Regional) Brain Bee competitions. Local champions then advance to the National Brain Bee, and finally, National champions have the opportunity to compete at the prestigious International Brain Bee competition.

After hosting our Regional Northern Nevada Brain Bee competition, we are thrilled to announce that we have a very deserving young individual getting ready to compete in the Nationals! However we do not have the funds to send this student and their chaperone to the 2024 USA Brain Bee Championship at the University of Central Florida April 19-21: https://cnlm.uci.edu/2024-usa-brain-bee/

We need your help! Your support will go directly to fund:

National competition registration ($400)
flights (~$1300)
lodging for 4 nights (~$800)
food, ground transportation & misc. costs (~$500)

No donation is too small, and our non-profit Society for Neuroscience Sierra Nevada Chapter can provide you with a tax-credit receipt. Please help us reach our goal and support our Nevada Regional winner compete in the Nationals!

Our meeting will be centered around Cassandra's defense practice, titled "Circadian disruption in genes, brain, and behavior". This will be a great opportunity to provide support and feedback for Cassandra, as well as for students to learn more about the defense process.

Please feel free to distribute the attached flyer to anyone who may be interested!

Hello Neuroscientists – On April 4 the Food for Thought program will feature a discussion of the anecdotal evidence that activation of GLP-1 G-protein coupled receptors can cause striking changes in an individual’s priorities. Specifically, there is evidence that GLP-1 receptor agonists curb drug and alcohol cravings in addition to stimulating insulin release, slowing gastric emptying, and reducing appetite. Join me at 5:30 on April 4 at Laughing Planet (941 N. Virginia St.) for this exciting event.
