To all of my Joyful Noise Studio students heading back to school: I’m cheering you on!

A new school year brings new teachers, new routines, new challenges, and so many new opportunities to learn and grow. Give yourself time to settle in, be patient with yourself, and remember that you don’t have to have everything figured out on day one.

And when the days get busy, I hope you’ll keep a little space for music, too. Let it be a place to breathe, reset, create, and simply enjoy something that belongs to you.

I’m so excited to see what this year brings for each of you. I’m proud of you already, and I can’t wait to make music together!

Wishing all of my students a happy, successful, and joy-filled school year!

As summer break winds down and we head into a new school year, I’ve been thinking about the little moments that made this summer special.

This photo has two of them: one of my favorite coffees from Mediterra and a bowl I painted at Clay Cafe in Sewickley, PA earlier this month.

I’ll be the first to admit that painting is definitely not my greatest artistic talent 😂, but that’s exactly what made the experience so much fun. I got to try something new, make something with my hands, laugh with family, and simply enjoy the process.

It reminded me that creativity doesn’t have to be something we’re good at to be worthwhile.

Sometimes it’s about trying something new, making a mess, creating something imperfect, and enjoying the experience along the way.

As we head back into the rhythm of school, lessons, practices, and busy schedules, I hope we all remember to make room for those little creative moments, too.

And maybe a good cup of coffee while we’re at it. ☕️

Here’s to a summer well spent...and to carrying a little of that creativity and joy with us into the new season.

As summer winds down and a new school year begins, life can start feeling busy pretty quickly.

New schedules. New classes. New responsibilities. New routines.

In the middle of all that change, I hope you’ll remember to make room for music.

Not just as another thing on your to-do list, but as an outlet. A place to breathe, create, express yourself, and take a break from everything else going on around you.

Play the song that makes you happy. Sing when you need to let something out. Sit at the piano and play just because you want to.

Music doesn't have to add to the noise of a busy season. Sometimes, it can be the thing that helps quiet it.

As we head into a new school year, let your music be a place where you can simply be yourself.

Fun Friday challenge! 🎶

Can you guess what instrument this is?

Here’s a hint: it originated in Trinidad and Tobago and is celebrated throughout World ?????? Month in August.

It has a unique, beautiful sound that can make you want to dance almost immediately!

Do you know what it is?

People sometimes ask me what my favorite part of teaching is.

Of course I love the music, but the truth is…it's always been about the people.

I love watching a student accomplish something they once thought was impossible. I love seeing confidence grow one lesson at a time. I love celebrating the big milestones and the quiet victories that happen along the way.

Every student who walks through my (virtual) studio brings a unique personality, story, and gift. Getting to be a small part of their musical journey is a privilege I never take for granted.

After all these years, that joy hasn't changed. In fact, it continues to grow.

Thank you to every student and family who has trusted me with your music. It truly is one of the greatest joys of my life.

Fun Friday!

I want to hear your story...

When did you know you loved music?

I'll start.

I fell in love with music the very first time I heard Peter and the Wolf. I had a book that told the story while the orchestra played, and I remember sitting for what felt like hours, completely lost in that musical adventure. Every instrument became a character, and every page brought the story to life in a new way. I didn't know it then, but those moments were planting the seeds for a lifelong love of music.

It's amazing how one song, one concert, one lesson, or one special memory can stay with us forever.

Now it's your turn...

Finish this sentence:

"I knew I loved music when..."

I'd love to read your story.

There’s something special about the start of August.

It feels like a chance to pause, reflect, and begin again.

Whether you've been practicing every day this summer or you've been away on vacation, this is a wonderful time to reset. Music isn't about perfection...it's about returning, one note at a time.

Don't worry about where you left off. Simply begin where you are today.

Every time you sit down at the piano or take a deep breath before you sing, you're investing in your growth. The music is still there, waiting for you.

Here's to a new month filled with fresh inspiration, renewed motivation, and the joy of making music.

As July comes to a close, let's take a moment to look back.

Every month brings something different...new songs, new challenges, new victories, and memories that stay with us long after the last note is played.

If you had to describe your July with just one word, what would it be?

Maybe it was growth, rest, adventure, confidence, joy, or something completely different.

I'll go first: Grateful. This month has been filled with wonderful students, meaningful music, and time to recharge with family.

Now it's your turn! Share your one word in the comments.

Summer has a way of inviting us to slow down. We travel, spend time with family, enjoy the sunshine, and take a break from our usual routines. And sometimes, that means our music takes a little vacation too.

If that's been you, here's your gentle reminder: don't worry about where you left off...just begin again.

Sit down at the piano. Sing your favorite song. Pull out a piece you haven't played in a while and let your fingers rediscover it. You might be surprised by how much is still there.

Music doesn't ask for perfection. It simply asks you to come back.

Sometimes revisiting an old favorite is exactly what we need to remember why we fell in love with music in the first place. That love is still there, waiting for you.

So this week, take a few minutes to reconnect with your music. One song. One practice session. One joyful moment at a time.

Welcome back. Your music has missed you. 💛🎶
