Homecoming looks a little extra special when two JNS students get to celebrate together! 💜

Meet Peyton, a JNS senior, and Ava, a JNS freshman...both students at Moon Area High School and both members of the Bel Canto choir. And even sweeter? Peyton is Ava’s mentor!

I absolutely love the full-circle moments that happen through music. Watching students grow, become leaders, encourage one another, and then have the opportunity to share those experiences together is one of my favorite parts of being a teacher.

Peyton is getting ready to graduate and begin her next chapter, while Ava is just beginning her high school journey. And somehow, music has brought them together right in the middle of it all. 🎶

These are the moments that remind me that music is about so much more than learning notes, singing the right pitches, or preparing for a performance. It connects us. It creates community. And sometimes, it brings people together across completely different seasons of life.

So glad these two got to get a Homecoming picture together! 🥰

Hello, October! 🍂🎶

A new month always feels like a little opportunity to pause and ask:

“What do I want to accomplish?”

Maybe there's a song you've been wanting to learn.

Maybe you want to feel more confident singing.

Maybe you'd like to finally tackle that tricky section you've been avoiding.

Maybe you want to practice more consistently.

Or maybe your goal is simply to enjoy making music more.

Your goal doesn't have to be huge. It doesn't have to be perfect. And it certainly doesn't have to look like anyone else's.

Pick something that feels meaningful to you, and then take it one step at a time.

October has 31 days.

That's 31 opportunities to learn something, try something, improve something, or simply make some joyful noise. 🎶

I came across this picture recently, and it made me smile.

I remember this particular performance. It was a stressful run, there was a lot happening, and there were definitely moments when I wondered if I had enough left in the tank.

But looking at this picture now, what stands out to me isn't the stress.

It's how much I love being at the piano.

Whether I'm sitting on a stage in front of an audience or sitting at my piano in my studio teaching a student, there is something about making music that brings me back to myself.

And I think that's an important thing to remember when you're learning music, too.

There will be days when practicing feels frustrating.

Days when a song you've been working on seems like it will never come together.

Days when you don't like the way your voice sounds or you just can't seem to get your fingers to cooperate.

That's okay.

Because underneath the goals, the practice, the performances, the mistakes, and all the hard work, there should still be something that brought you here in the first place:

You love music. ❤️

For me, that love has carried me through a lot of seasons...and it still brings me back to the piano every single time.

I hope you never lose sight of what made you fall in love with music in the first place.

Remember why you started. And keep making music. 🎶

There’s something special about the change of seasons. 🍂

The days get a little shorter.
The air gets a little cooler.
Our routines shift.
New chapters begin.

And through all of those changes, there’s something that can stay with us:

Music. 🎶

There are songs that remind us of summer.
Songs that feel like crisp fall mornings.
Songs we sing during the holidays.
Songs that get us through hard days.
Songs that make us dance around the kitchen for absolutely no reason.

Music has a beautiful way of meeting us wherever we are and becoming part of the season we're in.

As we welcome fall, I hope you find time to enjoy the music that makes this season special for you.

Because seasons change...

But the joy of making music can stay with us through them all.

Here's something I wish every young performer knew:

Making a mistake onstage does not mean you failed.

Forgot a word? Keep going.
Missed a note? Keep going.
Played the wrong chord? Keep going.
Lost your place? Breathe. Find your way back in.

Your audience doesn't necessarily know what was supposed to happen.

What they DO notice is how you recover.

Learning to keep going when something doesn't go according to plan is one of the most valuable skills a performer can develop.

Perfection isn't the goal.

Connection, confidence, and resilience are. 🎶

You might be a music family if… 😂🎶

🎹 You hear someone playing the same four measures over and over and eventually realize… they're actually getting better.

🎤 Someone in your house randomly starts singing...and suddenly the entire room has to hear it.

🥁 Every table, countertop, steering wheel, and pencil becomes a perfectly acceptable percussion instrument.

🎶 You hear a song on the radio and someone immediately says, “I LOVE THIS SONG!”

🎹 You can't walk past a piano without playing just one little thing.

🎤 A perfectly normal conversation somehow turns into singing.

🎵 You hear a familiar melody and immediately start trying to figure out what song it is.

😂 And eventually, you realize that music isn't just something you learn once a week…

It's become part of your everyday life.

That's one of my favorite things about teaching music. ❤️

The goal isn't just to learn notes, rhythms, songs, or techniques. It's to help music become something students enjoy, recognize, create, and carry with them.

And if that occasionally means hearing the same measure 47 times from the next room…

Well… that's part of the fun, too. 😂🎶

Audition season can bring ALL the feelings. 🎭

If you've already auditioned, you may be replaying every note, every lyric, every moment in your head and wondering, “Did I do enough?”

If your audition is still coming up, you may be feeling excited, nervous, or maybe a little bit of both.

Here's what I want you to remember:

Your audition is not a measurement of your worth or your talent.

For those who have already auditioned:
Take a breath. You prepared. You showed up. You put yourself out there. That is something to be proud of. ❤️

For those who still have auditions ahead:
Keep preparing, keep practicing, and keep reminding yourself that you don't have to be perfect. Your job isn't to walk into the room and prove that you're the best.

Your job is to tell the story, share your talent, and let them see YOU.

And no matter what happens when the cast list comes out, don't let one “yes” or “no” determine how you feel about yourself as a performer.

Every audition teaches you something.
Every performance builds your confidence.
Every time you step outside your comfort zone, you grow.

So whether you're waiting for the results or getting ready to walk into the room...I'm cheering for you! 🎶

Take a deep breath.

Trust your preparation.

Tell the story.

And most importantly…

Be proud of yourself for being brave enough to try. ✨

Happy Labor Day! 🇺🇸

Today is a good reminder that hard work matters...but so does rest.

As musicians, we spend a lot of time practicing, learning, repeating, refining, performing, and pushing ourselves to grow. And while I will always encourage my students to put in the work, I also want them to remember that they don't have to be productive every single day.

Sometimes the best thing you can do for your creativity is step away.

Take the day off. Sleep in. Spend time with people you love. Listen to music just because you enjoy it. Do something that has absolutely nothing to do with practicing. 😊

Then come back tomorrow refreshed and ready to make some joyful noise.

To all of you who work hard every day to build a life you love...today is for you. ❤️

Musical theater audition season is here, and if you’re preparing for an audition, remember: preparation is about more than knowing your notes.

It’s about walking into that room knowing you’ve done the work...and then allowing yourself to be present, confident, and expressive.

You don't have to be perfect. You just need to tell the story, make a choice, and let the people behind the table see you.

Prepare well. Take a breath. Then trust what you’ve worked for.
