Arnette Travis Although we live in a world filled with time-saving conveniences and free-flowing information; many people consider themselves to be unhappy, or struggle to feel happy. Life is too valuable and too short to spend in a state of unhappiness. Become the Person Who Truly Lives a Life of Purpose and Joy.
Purpose
Don’t make the mistake of believing that your purpose has to be a big thing. But it is a thing. A thing that wakes us up each day. A thing that we do that puts a smile on our face, lifts our spirit and touches our heart. A thing that makes us happy.
What is my purpose in life?, I asked the void.
What if I told you that you fulfilled it when you took an extra hour to talk to that kid about his life?, said the voice. Or when you paid for that young couple in the restaurant? Or when you saved that dog in traffic? Or when you tied your father’s shoes for him?
Your problem is that you equate your purpose with goal-based achievement. The Universe isn’t interested in your achievements … just your heart. When you choose to act out of kindness, compassion and love, you are already aligned with your true purpose. No need to look any further.

Shortly after retiring, I attended a local networking event. As usual, people asked “What do you do?” Impulse told me to say, “I’m a Financial Advisor”; but I could no longer claim that title. Instead I said “Whatever I want. I’m retired.”
That self-assured smug retort belied the feeling that my life lacked meaning and purpose. Truth be told, I felt as though my identity had been stripped bare. My daily, self-centered activities held no benefit to anyone except myself. What I did was not worth mentioning.
The feeling of identity loss in retirement is a common experience. Many people no longer have the sense of purpose and identity they had while working. The skills, talents or knowledge we utilized in the workplace environment gave us a sense of accomplishment and purpose. But these non-monetary contributions to our psyche are often overlooked in retirement planning and can take us by surprise if they are.
Creating a new identity for this life chapter may be difficult, but it is certainly not impossible. Here are a few ways to deal with loss of identity in retirement:
Take up new activities and hobbies. Whatever you land on, make sure that it stokes your passion and delivers a sense of accomplishment.
Reinforce your social connections with family and friends. Whether it’s through phone calls, visits or social media, making the effort to keep in touch with them is especially helpful for the major life change retirement brings about.
Volunteering is a great way to give back to your community and make you feel like you are making a difference. It can also help you meet new people and learn new skills.
Start a new business.
Make a plan for how you want to spend your time. Retirement is a time to reflect on your life and re-evaluate your priorities and goals.
Don't be afraid to ask for help. If you are struggling to cope with loss of identity in retirement, don't be afraid to reach out for help. There are many resources available to help you through this transition, such as counseling, support groups, and online forums.
Know that you are not alone in this experience. Many people go through the loss of identity and purpose when they retire. However, with time and effort you can find new ways to give meaning and purpose to your life.

To celebrate the extra day we’re given every four years, here’s what I call The Mental and Physical Fab Four, along with a bit of info of how they play into our daily life.
#1 What’s Eating You?
We know that we should eat nutritious foods and exercise to be healthy. But if you are not getting the essential nutrients your body needs, your body’s ability to function in the way nature intended is limited and in some cases, disabled. If you eat too much or too little, lack of proper nutrition can interfere with the ability to focus and concentrate, and recent research suggests that the risk of dementia can be lessened by diet choices.
You are what you eat, so don’t be fast, cheap, easy or fake. Your diet should include beans, fresh fruits (avoid fruit juices), green leafy vegetables and nutrient dense vegetables (e.g. cabbage and broccoli), fatty fish, avocados, peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, garlic and dark chocolate. Eat meat sparingly and in small amounts.
#2 Wet Up
Water is essential to all life forms, and makes up about 60% of the human body. The main reason we need to drink water is to replace body fluids lost through exhaling, sweating and eliminating waste. As we age, the physical sensation of being thirsty can dull, and may not occur often enough to prevent dehydration.
Drink ½ your body weight daily in ounces of water to ensure proper hydration. Set a reminder (maybe wear a rubber band around the wrist) to drink water throughout the day.
#3 Sleep Time
Lack of sleep impairs physical and mental function and sufficient sleep boosts your physical and mental functions. Sleep affects growth and stress hormones, the immune system, appetite, breathing, blood pressure and cardiovascular health. On average, adults need 7-8 hours of sleep every night to achieve the maximum restorative benefits of sleep.
Go to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time each morning.
Limit the use of electronics before bed.
Relax before bedtime. A warm bath or reading might help.
#4 Work It Out
Our cars and household conveniences have severely limited our physical movement, so that we don’t have to expend great amounts of energy in the performance of daily activities. But this easy life has a dark side, as sitting has more detriment than benefit. Our bodies were made for movement and when we don’t move enough, we pay the consequences in the form of declining physical ability and health. In other words, move it or lose it.
Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. Start out slowly and add to your exercise regimen over time if you haven’t been physically active for a while. Being sore after exercising usually means that you’ve pushed your body too far, too soon.

You can’t have a better tomorrow if you are thinking about yesterday all the time. - Charles F. Kettering
A common indulgence for human beings is remembering past times.
Memories can bring a smile to your face and warmth to your heart. Positive and happy memories can strengthen your resolve to do something because you remember that you have already done something you enjoyed or benefitted from. Generally speaking: good memories make us happy!
But memories also remind us of bad or troubled times. Those memories are best forgotten or buried deep enough so they don’t surface easily. Unfortunately, they often reappear as in PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), and we relive those original moments in time of sadness, pain or grief. Luckily, there are ways to reset our brains to not “go there”, and avoid the negativity that bad memories incite.
The change in lifestyle that occurs when you retire allows more time to indulge your memories. And whether good or bad, memories can steal the present from us - if we let them.
If you find yourself in recollection mode, while at the same time not engaged in the present through action (as in making new memories), book a retirement blueprint call today.
