I've been getting a TON of questions about safe formula preparation in light of the Similac recall-- specifically about whether powder formula must be sterilized by mixing it with boiled, hot water before cooling and serving.

If you're confused about this, you're not alone! 😵

The recommendations vary between agencies and even by formula manufacturer. To make it simpler, I've compiled guidelines from the following top health agencies:

🧬 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

🧬 The American Academy of Pediatrics

🧬 The U.S. Food and Drug Administration

🧬 The World Health Organization

The majority of these agencies do NOT recommend routine sterilization of formula. Why not? Because it's typically not necessary for healthy, full-term infants and it can increase the risk of burns to baby and caregiver.

Can you sterilize powder formula if you want? Of course! Just know that if you're using a formula with probiotics included (like Ge**er formulas or Nutramigen), adding it to high-temp water will kill off that good bacteria too!

Should you sterilize powder formula if your baby is a newborn, was a preemie, or is immunocompromised? All agencies recommend discussing this with your child's doctor.

And lastly-- PLEASE do not choose to sterilize and then use recalled formula. Similac and the FDA have NOT stated that this is a safe or appropriate step. Instead, both (and myself!) are recommending that you stop using recalled formulas altogether.

Questions about sterilizing? Leave them below!

You've probably put a lot of thought into your pregnancy and birth but have you thought about how you'll manage once your baby is home? "You'll never sleep again" and "Don't worry, you will figure it out" are often the insights we receive from well meaning friends and relatives but you deserve better than just surviving the first few weeks. I offer the holistic approach of postpartum planning and consultation in addition to perinatal visits to make sure you and your family are fully supported during your special time.
