Today we remember and celebrate the life and legacy of Polly Mathys, a devoted educator, mentor, and unwavering supporter of Alvernia Athletics and the arts. Polly's impact on the Alvernia community was immeasurable. Throughout her many years at the university, she dedicated her life to shaping the academic, personal, and spiritual journeys of countless students. Her commitment to our Franciscan values was evident in everything she did, from her work in the classroom to her tireless service to the broader community.

As the founder of Alvernia's annual Turkey Drive, Polly touched the lives of countless local families while inspiring a tradition of generosity that will continue for generations to come. That initiative is just one example of her extraordinary commitment to serving others. Her compassion, selflessness, and desire to make a difference defined the way she lived her life and the legacy she leaves behind.

Polly's passion for Alvernia Athletics was infectious, and her love for the university was unwavering. There are far too many stories to tell about the ways she supported our student-athletes, but every team and every athlete who crossed paths with her carries memories of her encouragement, kindness, and enthusiastic presence at games and events.

For Club Hockey, one memory stands above the rest. During one of our annual Pink in the Rink games, we presented Polly with a jersey identical to the ones worn by our players, with two meaningful changes. The captain's "C" was replaced with an "S" to honor her as a survivor, and the jersey's color was changed from pink to represent the type of cancer she courageously battled. It was a small gesture that reflected the immense respect, admiration, and gratitude we all felt for her strength and resilience.

While Polly's presence will be deeply missed, her spirit will continue to live on in the countless lives she touched throughout her time at Alvernia. Her generosity, kindness, and unwavering support for others will remain an enduring part of our community, inspiring future generations of students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

Rest in peace, Polly. Thank you for your compassion, your service, your unwavering support, and the lasting difference you made in the lives of so many. Your legacy will forever be a part of Alvernia University.

The family will be holding a Celebration of Life because Polly did not want a funeral—she wanted a party. In that spirit, those who knew and loved her are invited to gather in festive and loving remembrance, sharing stories, laughter, memories, and gratitude for a life well lived.
