Tracking animals is more than recognizing footprints on the ground. It's also being aware of the audible story unfolding in the world around us.

Many folks already know that ravens can tip them off to where wolves are hunting… or if elk are nearby.

But, how do they do this?

George Bumann — sculptor, naturalist, storyteller, and author of Eavesdropping on Animals — has spent decades in Yellowstone listening so closely to ravens that he’s decoded more than 15 distinct call types.

His work reveals an entire hidden world of signals, warnings, and conversations most of us never notice. Knowing the language of birds is one of the essential layers of awareness we can all learn to level-up our skills as trackers and lovers of nature.
