𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲, 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗱
This week, we pause to observe Memorial Day, a time to honor and remember the service, sacrifice, and commitment of the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. It is a moment of reflection, gratitude, and respect for the freedoms we enjoy because of them.

At our community college, this day also reinforces our commitment to support veterans and military families as they transition from service to civilian careers. Many veterans bring leadership, discipline, technical experience, and problem-solving skills developed through years of service. What they often need is support translating that experience into civilian language, aligning it to today’s workforce needs, and identifying where their Military Occupational (MO) Specialty fits across industries.

Career transition does not happen in isolation. It affects families, timelines, finances, and identity. Veterans returning to the classroom may refresh academic skills, pursue new credentials, or redefine a career path altogether. Community colleges play a critical role by providing accessible education, flexible pathways, and career coaching that recognizes both experience and potential.

Our work is not about starting over. It is about building forward. It is about helping veterans articulate their value, connecting skills gained in uniform to meaningful careers, and accessing opportunities without losing momentum. It is also about making sure families feel supported throughout that process.

On this Memorial Day, we honor those we have lost by continuing to show up for those who are here. Supporting veterans is not just a program. It is a commitment.

Meet Akshat Vashishtha, a driven first-year Wake Technical Community College student with a strong vision for his future in technology, leadership, and innovation.

From strategically planning his transfer pathway to actively networking through Cloud Security Alliance meetings, Akshat is already making an impact both inside and outside the classroom. He is also leading the launch of Wake Tech’s new AI Club, creating a collaborative space for students interested in artificial intelligence and its real-world applications. Akshat credits Rachel Cox, Career Coach at Wake Technical Community College, for helping turn the AI Club from an idea into a reality through her encouragement and support.

Akshat's advice to fellow students: “Take the right risks if your mind tells you to. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something because with the right mind and strategy, you can.”
