This is what preparation for a commission looks like. Trying out different nibs, ink, watercolors, gouache. An hour and a half of work before even the drafts are made. Then the good paper and medium is finally brought out. Calligraphy isn’t quick.

Finished this commission yesterday. I have never lettered on a canvas frame. I had to tape the draft to the underside of the canvas, and then put the whole thing on top of a light board. Accomplishing interesting commissions is always a push to make you figure out how to do it.

Years ago, I colored in a page in a book with colored pencils. Two weeks ago, I decided to have it made into a mahjong mat. I think it turned out so well. I can’t wait to play with it. I have the perfect tiles.

I had fun lettering this envelope. I used a ruling pen, walnut ink, and dropped in Finetec into the ink.

Learned a new letterform that Amity Parks designed and taught this weekend for The Triangle Calligraphers’ Guild members. We also learned how to use Bister Inks from Belgium as well as Automatic 3A broad-edged, double-metal nib pens.

Today, I took out my books that have Uncial exemplars in them. I am prepping to teach this calligraphic hand to the Triangle Calligraphers' Guild on April 11th from 10am-1pm. If you are interested, DM me for more details.

I enjoyed learning from Peggy Williams last weekend at the Triangle Calligraphers’ Guild. She taught us a drawn letter style, and then we added little decorations to them.
