This is awful, awful news. NC is already diverting hundreds of millions of taxpayer money to private schools through the NC Opportunity Scholarship program. Gov. Stein was right to veto this legislation in 2025. This override means more money for voucher schools instead of public schools where ALL children are accepted regardless of ability or family income. Private schools get to choose their students and don't have to disclose how taxpayer money is spent or how students perform.

"The Wake school district can do more to formalize expectations among teachers about how they can work to improve student attendance, the school district noted in a summary of the new report, conducted by Attendance Works. The district should not just focus on communicating truancy concerns to families, a district summary of the report notes."

Wake plans teacher training in generative AI, district-wide policy for use by fall

ICYMI: Limiting taxes can hurt the state's ability to fund essential goods and services. " 'Many of our counties and towns are paying for essential services that are supposed to be paid for by the state, that are supposed to be paid for by this body, and we know that these counties and towns primarily rely on property taxes to fund these essential services,' said Rep. Brandon Lofton, D-Mecklenburg."

The state legislature is taking final votes Wednesday to put several constitutional amendments restricting tax rates on November's ballot. They passed the House thanks to support from two Charlotte legislators who recently left the Democratic Party.
