My name is Iris Flowers, Visionary & Founder of Where Eagles Soar High, LLC.

This is a place where parents of elementary-school-aged children can gather, learn, ask questions, access resources, build relationships, and become stronger advocates for their children’s academic development and overall well-being.

DAY 4 — 🏫 SCHOOL CHOICE DOES NOT MEAN “PRIVATE SCHOOL ONLY”

Let’s clear up a misconception.

When we talk about SCHOOL CHOICE, we are talking about parents understanding the educational options available to their children.

That may include:

🏫 Traditional public school

🏫 Public charter school

🏫 Private school

🏠 Homeschooling

💻 Online learning

🎓 Specialized educational programs

💰 Scholarship-supported education

The question every parent should be asking is:

“What educational environment gives MY CHILD the opportunity to thrive?”

There is no one-size-fits-all answer.

A school that works beautifully for one child may not be the right environment for another.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO TODAY?

Take a serious look at your child’s:

Parents, here’s your SCHOOL CHOICE reminder:

The next Opportunity Scholarship application cycle for the 2027–28 school year is expected to open on the first Monday of February 2027.

That may sound like you have plenty of time.

You DON’T.

This is the time to prepare.

Between now and February, parents should be:

📌 Researching private schools

📌 Comparing tuition

📌 Learning about scholarship requirements

📌 Gathering important family documents

📌 Understanding their child’s academic needs

📌 Touring schools

📌 Asking questions

📌 Learning about deadlines

The smartest parents don’t wait until the application opens to start learning.

THEY PREPARE BEFORE THE WINDOW OPENS.

Create a folder, digital or physical called:

📚 DAY 2: SOMETIMES A DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENT MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE

This one is personal.

Two of my children struggled academically throughout their school years.

By the time they reached their Junior and Senior years of high school, they were approaching 20 years old.

As their mother, I knew I had to advocate for them.

I knew that if something didn’t change, they could potentially fail or drop out.

So I made a decision.

We packed our bags and moved back to North Carolina.

I enrolled them in a private school and used the NC Opportunity Scholarship to assist with tuition.

What happened next is a story I’ll never forget.

The smaller class sizes gave my children an educational environment where they could receive more individualized attention.

And they began to excel.

They graduated.

They received their diplomas.

And most importantly, they experienced what it felt like to succeed academically.

🎓 The lesson for me wasn’t that private school is better than public school.

The lesson was that my children needed something different.

And when given another opportunity, they responded.

That’s what I believe school choice is about.

It’s about giving parents the ability to look at their child’s circumstances and say:

“This isn’t working. What other options are available?”

For some families, the answer may be public school.

For others, it may be private school.

For another family, it may be charter school, homeschool or Montessori.

There is no one-size-fits-all child and there shouldn’t be a one-size-fits-all education.

I’m grateful that my children had another opportunity.

And I’m grateful that I advocated for them.

Parents: Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t be afraid to explore your options. And never stop advocating for your child.
