Our 2nd grade gifted students stepped into someone else’s “shoes” this week—well… maybe a sock, a crayon, or even a balloon! 🧦🖍️🎈

As part of our perspective writing unit, students chose an everyday object—a lost sock, a broken crayon, or a lonely balloon—and brought it to life through storytelling. They imagined thoughts, feelings, and adventures from their object’s point of view, then illustrated their stories to match.

The creativity, empathy, and imagination on display were incredible! From socks searching for their match, to crayons finding beauty in being different, to balloons drifting through big adventures—each piece was as unique as the student who created it.

We’re so proud of their hard work and the way they stretched their thinking beyond themselves. 💡✨

Easter Coloring Contest!! 🐣🐰 Our 2nd grade students have entered a contest in our community. Archusa Finance is holding a coloring contest and the kids need your help! Please go under the comments and look at their fantastic pictures. Like and share their artwork to get more likes! One boy and one girl will receive a prize for the most likes by April 2. The award will be given April 3. Like and share to help these artists win! 🏆

🍀✨ That Pesky Leprechaun Strikes Again! ✨🍀

We had a little visitor sneak through our classrooms last week… and let’s just say… he left quite the mess behind! 😏

On March 17th for St. Patrick’s Day, our 2nd and 6th grade SWAT students took on the challenge of catching that tricky leprechaun by designing and building their very own leprechaun traps! 🪤🌈

Students began by planning their designs, labeling materials they would need, and thinking through how their trap would actually work. As they got started, many quickly realized that things don’t always go as planned—and that’s where the real magic happened! 💡

They adjusted, redesigned, and improved their traps along the way, showing that growth, flexibility, and problem-solving are all part of the learning process. (And let’s be honest… that leprechaun is still pretty hard to catch! 🍀😂)

💙💛 Gifted Standards in Action:
• Creative Thinking – Students designed original trap ideas using imagination and innovation
• Critical Thinking & Problem Solving – They analyzed what worked (and what didn’t!) and made improvements
• Research & Inquiry – Students explored what materials and strategies might help them succeed
• Communication Skills – They planned, labeled, and explained their designs
• Persistence & Task Commitment – Even when plans changed, they kept going!

✨ Why This Matters:
Hands-on, creative projects like this allow our gifted learners to think deeply, take risks, and learn from failure. These experiences build confidence, encourage independence, and show students that sometimes the process is even more important than the final product.

We may not have caught the leprechaun this year… but we definitely caught some AMAZING thinking! 🧠💚

Call. Call. Call. Or email….. These students need gifted funding!

Important Update on Gifted Funding in Mississippi

While the House Education Committee has indicated they do not plan to take up additional Senate bills this session — meaning SB2293 may not move forward as a standalone bill — this does not mean the effort is over.

There is still a strong pathway forward. The Senate has several education bills moving, and those bills can be amended to include the key language from SB2293 — specifically, the proposed increase in the gifted weight and multiplier within the Mississippi Student Funding Formula. House and Senate Education Committee leaders have agreed to work toward a workable solution, and conversations are ongoing.

MAGC representatives have already met with legislative leaders to advocate for gifted students, and momentum is still on our side.

Action Is Still Needed

Legislators need to hear that:
• Increasing the gifted weight in the funding formula matters.
• Gifted students deserve equitable funding.
• Districts rely on appropriate funding to provide high-quality gifted services.
• The language from SB2293 should be preserved through an amendment to another viable education bill.

Please consider contacting your local Representatives and Senators this week. A short, respectful email explaining why gifted funding impacts students in your district can make a real difference.

Now is the time to advocate. Our gifted learners are counting on us.

Today our SWAT (Students With Amazing Talents) crew from 2nd–6th grade took a field trip to the QHS Career Center… and let me just say — the future is in GOOD hands! 👏💙💛

Our students didn’t just walk around — they got hands-on experience in so many incredible programs:

🩺 Health Science – Practiced CPR like pros! We may have a few future nurses and doctors in the making.
🚔 Law & Public Safety – Solved a crime! Detectives-in-training were on the case and took their job very seriously.
📚 Ed Prep – Our future teachers made bracelets and showed they already have the patience and creativity it takes to lead a classroom.
🌲 Forestry – Rocked the fancy safety vests and learned about the many career paths connected to forestry and natural resources.
🎥 Broadcasting – We met future meteorologists and talk show hosts who were ready for their close-up!
👩‍🍳 Culinary Arts – Let’s just say… the beignets were chef’s kiss! We may have tasted the best ones around. 😋

It was such a fun and eye-opening experience for our SWAT students to explore real-world careers and see what their futures could look like. Planting seeds of possibility early is what gifted education is all about! 🌟

A BIG thank you to the QHS Career Center staff and students for welcoming us and letting our Panthers tour your amazing programs. We are so grateful for the opportunity!

QSD is missing our students while they’re out sick and can’t wait to have everyone back on campus feeling their best! 💙 Our school nurses wanted to share an important reminder with families:

“Please help stop the spread of illness by keeping your sick students home. We are seeing an increase in illness across all campuses. Parents can help by not sending sick students to school and by following the school’s fever policy. Any student who has a fever must stay home until they are fever-free for 24 hours without the use of medication. Thank you for helping us keep our students and staff healthy.”

We appreciate everyone doing their part to keep our schools safe and well. Take care and we’ll see you back soon! 🐾

🎓✨ SWAT Students on the Move! ✨🎓

Today our 6th Grade Gifted SWAT students had an incredible opportunity to attend the College & Career Fair at QJH — and they showed up curious, confident, and ready to learn!

Each student received a “passport” and traveled from station to station collecting stamps while exploring colleges and careers in our area. They were able to speak directly with representatives, ask thoughtful questions, and truly envision their future possibilities.

This experience directly connected to our College & Career Readiness standards for Gifted Education, helping students explore strengths, interests, and future goals in a meaningful, real-world way. It’s one thing to talk about careers in the classroom — it’s another to shake hands with professionals and ask, “What does it take to do what you do?”

A HUGE shoutout to Ms. Joyner for allowing our gifted students to attend and for supporting opportunities that expand their thinking beyond the classroom walls. We are so thankful! 💙💛

Our SWAT field trip for tomorrow will be rescheduled.

The Spelling Bee that was scheduled for tomorrow will be rescheduled to Thursday, January 29th at 5:30 at the QJH library.
