🔴🔵⚫️ Happy International Dot Day! 🔴🔵⚫️

Our 2nd grade SWAT students put their creative thinking skills to work today and turned simple dots into something magical. 🪄

We started by reading The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds, a story that encourages children to believe in themselves, embrace their creativity, and have the courage to “make their mark.” 🎨🖼️🫟

Students then took on the 12-Dot Challenge, turning 12 ordinary dots into different objects. We finished by using the Quiver app to bring our dot creations to life through augmented reality.

It was so much fun seeing how one little dot could inspire so many BIG ideas. 💡

🇺🇸 Remembering 9/11 Through Learning, Reflection, and Creativity 🇺🇸

This week, Quitman Upper Elementary SWAT students took time to learn about the history and impact of September 11, 2001. Students explored a variety of sources and formats to learn how information can be presented in different ways while also examining the importance of identifying reliable and credible sources.

After learning about this tragic day in our nation’s history, students were given an opportunity to reflect on what they learned, consider the lasting impact of 9/11, and think about what they believe we should remember.

Students then used their creativity and individual strengths to develop a project that could help share the history, lessons, and meaning of 9/11 with others. 🇺🇸

This learning experience connected beautifully with the Mississippi Gifted Education Outcomes, allowing students to develop:

🔎 Thinking Skills – analyzing information, making connections, and drawing conclusions
💡 Creativity – developing original ideas and creative ways to communicate their understanding
📚 Information Literacy – researching, evaluating sources, and determining how information should be shared
🎤 Communication Skills – selecting appropriate ways to communicate ideas and information to an audience
❤️ Affective Skills – reflecting on personal and cultural experiences, empathy, and respect for others
🎯 Success Skills – demonstrating organization, decision-making, project management, and goal-setting

Most importantly, students were reminded that history is more than dates and facts—it is about people, choices, experiences, and the lessons we carry forward.

We remember. We reflect. We learn. We share.❤️

🇺🇸 Remembering 9/11 Through Learning, Reflection, and Creativity 🇺🇸

This week, Quitman Upper Elementary SWAT students took time to learn about the history and impact of September 11, 2001. 🧱🗣️ LEGO Communication Challenge! 🗣️🧱

Our 6th grade gifted students practiced communication, listening, and perspective-taking through a partner LEGO challenge!

One student described a LEGO creation while the other student tried to rebuild it based ONLY on their partner’s directions. We started with no questions allowed, which made things interesting! 😂 Then we switched it up and allowed students to ask questions, clarify directions, and give feedback.

Students quickly discovered that good communication is about more than just talking. It requires careful listening, asking thoughtful questions, using precise language, and making sure your message is understood.

Through this challenge, students practiced:
🧠 Critical thinking
🗣️ Effective communication
👂 Active listening
🤝 Collaboration and teamwork
🔄 Flexibility and perspective-taking
💡 Creative problem-solving
🎯 Attention to detail

It was a great reminder that sometimes the difference between “I said it!” and “They understood it!” is a LOT of communication! 😆

🧱🌉 LEGO Bridge Challenge: Think. Build. Test. Improve! 🌉🧱

Our 2nd grade gifted students took on a LEGO Engineering Challenge this week! Their mission? Build a bridge that could stretch over a “ravine,” hold a character, and stand completely on its own for at least 5 seconds. 😮

Just when they thought they had conquered the challenge… 🌎💥 EARTHQUAKE! 💥🌎

With a little table shaking, students had to see if their bridges could withstand the unexpected. When some designs didn’t hold up, they didn’t give up—they went back to the drawing board, strengthened their structures, and tried again!

Through this challenge, students practiced the Engineering Design Process by:
🔹 Identifying the problem
🔹 Brainstorming and planning
🔹 Building and testing
🔹 Evaluating what worked (and what didn’t!)
🔹 Redesigning and improving
🔹 Testing again

Our 2nd grade gifted learners also practiced important gifted skills such as creative problem-solving, critical thinking, flexibility, perseverance, communication, collaboration, and resilience. 💡🧠🤝

The biggest lesson? Failure isn’t the end of the challenge—it’s information that helps us build something better! ❤️

They learned that great engineers don’t expect their first design to be perfect. They test, learn, improve, and try again.

And, of course, there was plenty of teamwork, creativity, and LEGO fun along the way! 🧱✨

🎨✨ 2nd Grade Self-Portraits: A Picture + A Poem! ✨🎨

Our 2nd grade gifted students got creative with 3D portraits that were designed to look just like them! From hairstyles and accessories to clothing and tiny details, each student used their creativity and self-awareness to create a one-of-a-kind portrait. 🖍️👀

But we didn’t stop with the artwork! Each student used the letters in their name to create an acrostic poem filled with words that describe who they are. 💙

This activity gave our students the opportunity to:
🌟 Express their individuality
🌟 Think creatively and make artistic choices
🌟 Practice self-awareness and reflection
🌟 Use descriptive vocabulary
🌟 Connect language arts with visual arts
🌟 Make decisions and explain their thinking
🌟 Develop creative and critical-thinking skills

Most importantly, they had the chance to celebrate what makes them uniquely THEM! 💛

Our gifted learners are learning that there are so many ways to show what we know—and there’s no one else quite like you! 🥰🎨

🏗️ THE GREAT SPAGHETTI TOWER CHALLENGE! 🍝

Our 2nd grade gifted students put their teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving skills to the test!

Their challenge? Build the tallest freestanding tower using ONLY:

🍝 20 spaghetti noodles
📏 1 yard of tape
🧵 1 yard of string
🍡 1 large marshmallow

And there was a catch… the marshmallow had to be at the very top! 😱

Students had to plan, communicate, test ideas, make adjustments, and work together to create a structure that could actually stand on its own. There were some towers that stood tall, some that leaned a little (or a LOT 😂), and plenty of creative solutions along the way!

🎉 MISSION: SAVE FRED — SUCCESS! 🪱🚤

Today our SWAT students took on a challenge that looked simple… until they actually had to do it! 😂

Fred was stranded on top of an upside-down “boat,” his life preserver was trapped underneath, and our students had to figure out how to get Fred safely back into his life preserver using only the materials provided. They had to follow the rules, avoid letting Fred “drown,” and—most importantly—work together!

This challenge was about MUCH more than saving a gummy worm. It put our gifted students’ skills to work:

🧠 Critical Thinking – They analyzed the situation and thought carefully about their next move.

💡 Creativity – They came up with different ideas and looked at the problem from different angles.

🧩 Problem Solving – They tested strategies, adjusted their plans, and figured out what worked.

🤝 Teamwork & Collaboration – They listened to one another, shared ideas, and worked toward a common goal.

💪 Persistence – When an idea didn’t work, they didn’t give up. They tried again!

🗣️ Communication – They had to explain their thinking, listen to their teammates, and coordinate their moves.

And in the end…

🎉 FRED WAS SAVED! 🎉

This is exactly what we love about SWAT. Our gifted students aren’t just learning what to think—they’re learning how to think, how to work together, and how to approach a challenge when there isn’t an obvious answer.

Sometimes learning looks like a worksheet.
Sometimes it looks like a gummy worm, four paper clips, and an upside-down cup. 😂

Either way… our SWAT kids were thinking! 💙💛

The first couple of weeks of school have been BUSY, but we are already having so much fun in Gifted! 💙💛

One of our first projects was creating Identity Portraits! I took black-and-white photos of each student, and they transformed their portraits into a reflection of who they are and who they hope to become. They added things they love, their interests, dreams for the future, places they want to visit, and so many little details that make them uniquely them. 🖤✨

It has been so much fun getting to know our students beyond the classroom and seeing their personalities, creativity, and big dreams come to life!

And this is just the beginning! 🐾💙💛
