What is dyslexia? Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability. Dyslexia refers to a cluster of symptoms, which result in people having difficulties with specific language skills, particularly reading. Students with dyslexia usually experience difficulties with other language skills such as spelling, writing, and pronouncing words.

Phonics might sound like a big word, but it’s actually a simple idea that helps kids figure out how to read and write. For kindergarteners just starting school, learning phonics is super important—it’s the groundwork that helps them become great readers.

Phonics teaches kids how letters and sounds go together. Once children know this, they can start sounding out words all by themselves. Instead of guessing or memorizing whole words, they use what they know about sounds to read new ones. It makes reading feel less like a mystery and more like something they can do!

Phonics lessons for kindergarteners should be fun and hands-on. Teachers sing songs about the alphabet, play games with sounds, and use things like letter tiles or cards. Every day, kids get chances to practice, and learning to read starts feeling like a game.

The things kids pick up from phonics in kindergarten help them as they move up in school. Kids who get a good start with phonics are ready for harder reading and writing challenges later on. Studies show that kids who learn phonics early become strong readers, and that helps them do well in all their schoolwork.

Phonics isn’t just another thing on the kindergarten schedule—it’s a building block for learning. When children learn how letters and sounds work together, they get the tools they need to read, write, and succeed in school. Giving them this gift in kindergarten really sets them up for lifelong learning!

Achieving adequate to average to high grades on quizzes and tests can be a very difficult challenge for students with dyslexia. It can also be a perfect opportunity to teach students strong study and preparation skills that will allow them to progress towards succeeding in school and towards a lifetime of learning. The building of these skills and this mind-set is the most important piece, along with family involvement, at meeting and beating the challenges that dyslexia presents to students.

We have found no matter how well intentioned the student’s school may be in reading support services for students, which usually includes supplying readymade notes, reducing academic work and homework, and reading for and to students, no future employers will want to hear the teen or adult needs multiple accommodations to learn, undertake and complete work assigned. This is both a fact of life and reality that all parents should acknowledge and embrace in order to beat dyslexia with their children.

Consequently, it is our belief and direct experience with success, that students with dyslexia should be, because they can be, enabled to become independent readers and writers in most, if not all, academic pursuits. So, organization, hard work and building basic and advanced abilities to tackle all expected educational pursuits are paramount to current and future academic growth and success.

It has always been abundantly clear that the emotional toll and drain to students and adults with dyslexia is both sizable and deep. With every dyslexic student we have worked with, all have expressed they believe they were not smart. Addressing that painful emotion with them is critical.

Once given the opportunity to address these painful feelings, the path for learning is cleared for them to be able to learn to read, spell and manage the English language.

Take the time to speak with your child about their feelings surrounding learning. If they express feelings of not being smart, give examples of how they are smart as well as where they excel in other areas of their lives such as sports, art, theater, etc. Different ways to learn is OK and that is one of the things that makes us all unique.

It’s important to recognize that for children with dyslexia it often takes them longer, often times two to three times longer, than children without dyslexia to complete a task. Learn strategies to help your child with their time management.
