This weekend the Iowa National Guard were recognized at the Iowa State Fair along with those Guard members who paid the ultimate sacrifice during combat operations.

The rodeo at the fair included the Deputy Commanding General of the Iowa National Guard swearing in the newest members of the Iowa National Guard.

The ceremonies were kicked off with presentation of colors by the Central Campus High School Marine Corps JROTC program in Des Moines, Iowa and the singing of the national anthem.

High school students enrolled in JROTC learn about history , traditions, leadership, community service and much more in the JROTC. They also get many opportunities to practice what they have learned.

The goal is for them to take and practice the values that they have learned with them no matter where they go after high school.

They made it up the rope!! The young men at the 30 day College Orientation Workshop (COW ) at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington , are learning technique is often more important that brute strength.

30 days !! 30 young men. No smart phones. Lot's of challenges (physical and mental), discipline, education, opportunities , and enrichment .

30 days away from home, on campus ,3 meals a day, 30 days of challenges. The only cost is getting there and getting back home.

We had (3) Cadets from Mcjrotc Como Park and (1) from Holmes High School in Kentucky this year.

Hot fill !! Opening for a Senior Marine Instructor at Marine Leadership Academy in Chicago . The program has 5 Senior Enlisted Marine instructors, and 400 plus cadets. Located in the heart of Chicago. This year graduates included a cadet who received a Navy ROTC scholarship to Tuskegee University.

30 straight days (over night ) of mentorship, mental and physical growth, education, leadership ,fun, and physical fitness for 30 young men at Virginia Military Institute in the Orientation Workshop.

English and Math classes daily, repelling ,canoeing, hiking , camping, horseback riding, swimming ,community service, financial management classes, CPR classes, and more. All that and 3 meals a day. The program covers all cost for the camp except for transportation to and from camp. (The boys live on campus for the 30 days)

We have (4) Marine Corps MCJROTC cadets participating this year (3) from Como Park in Minnesota and , one from Holmes High School in Kentucky.

When Mom and dad see these young men at graduation after 30 days they are amazed at how much they have learned and changed.

Our Marine Corps JROTC instructors teach, train, and mentor cadets to be more than just students. They develop young leaders to recognize those who paved the way and sacrificed for us. They teach them to give back to their community, and to set the example for those who will follow them. The cadets from Romeoville High School in Illinois like some many other JROTC cadets took the time to recognize our veterans no longer with us on Memorial Day.

No matter where these your leaders go after high school they will take their priceless leadership skills with them. Thank you to all the Marine Corps JROTC instructors for what you do day in and day out.

BeIng accountable for your action, showing up on time, taking the initiative, keeping your word, and having tact are some valuable lessons cadets learn in the Marine Corps JROTC program. These lessons pay dividends in school, at home, in college, and on the job.

Cadet 1stLt Arenas of Marine Leadership Academy in Chicago received the Women Marines Association Award today. The Women Marines Association award in MCJROTC is a national-level award presented to a cadet who demonstrates outstanding leadership, character, and service within the unit and school community. The award is sponsored by the Women Marines Association (WMA), an organization dedicated to preserving the history and traditions of women Marines. Congratulations Cadet Arenas.

Today I had the opportunity to meet Cadet Walrath from the Como Park High school Marine Corps JROTC program in Minnesota. He’s also in the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Explorer Program. He wants to become a Marine when he graduates from high school. With all the activities in Marine Corps JROTC and the time participation in the explorers program there is very little time wasted on his smart phone. He’s doing big things as a 9th grader.

There are still teenagers out there living a life beyond the screen of an electronic device. JROTC helps with that.

Both of these high school students are preparing themselves for the world beyond their high school walls. The young man in alpha’s will be attending the summer seminar at the Naval Academy this summer. The young man is dress blues will be going to Marine Corps boot camp.

Wherever they go they will be better prepared to handle the challenges of being a follower, leader, team player, accountable, responsible, and to deal with change due to what they have learned in Marine Corps JROTC.

Lets go Pacific High School.
