A high qualification score looks good on paper. But does it actually predict performance when it matters most?

In his latest Tactical Science article, Executive Director Dr. Pete Blair examines the disconnect between fi****ms qualification scores and real world performance, challenging assumptions about what traditional qualification standards actually tell us about an officer's capabilities.

If the score does not predict performance, we need to ask whether we are measuring the right things.

Training Before You Need It
You don't take a CPR class because you expect someone to collapse.
You don't learn land navigation because you expect to get lost.
You don't practice firearm safety because you expect something to go wrong.
You train because you don't know when those skills might be needed.
Preparedness is about giving yourself options before an unexpected situation takes those options away.
At Salmon River Tactics, I teach practical skills including:
🧭 Land Navigation & Map Reading
🌲 Wilderness Survival
🩹 CPR & Wilderness First Aid
🩸 Stop the Bleed®
🔫 Firearm Safety & Training
🛡️ SABRE Red Pepper Spray Training
🚨 Emergency & Active Threat Preparedness
You may never need some of these skills—but if the day comes when you do, you'll be glad you took the time to learn them.
Don't wait for an emergency to become your teacher.
Train today. Be ready tomorrow.

What Would You Do If Your GPS Failed?
We're surrounded by technology that makes navigation incredibly easy—until it doesn't.

Your phone battery dies.
Your GPS loses signal.
Your electronics get damaged.
Would you still know how to get where you're going?
That's why map and compass skills still matter.

A basic understanding of land navigation can help you: 🗺️ Read a topographic map
🧭 Determine direction with a compass
📍 Understand your location using coordinates
⛰️ Identify terrain and elevation changes
🥾 Plan a route before you head into the woods

You don't have to be an experienced outdoorsman to learn these skills. They're practical skills that can benefit hikers, hunters, campers, search-and-rescue volunteers, and anyone who spends time outdoors.

Technology is a great tool. Training gives you a backup plan.

At Salmon River Tactics, my Introduction to Land Navigation course is designed to help you build those fundamentals and become more confident navigating with a map and compass.

Question: If your phone died right now while you were miles into the woods, would you know how to get back?

Preparedness Is Peace of Mind

People often ask why I wanted to start this business and teach fi****ms safety, Stop the Bleed®, wilderness survival, land navigation, CPR, and emergency preparedness.

The answer is simple:
Because emergencies don't make appointments.
We can't predict when we'll need these skills, but we can choose to be prepared before that day comes.

Every class you take, every skill you practice, and every hour you invest in training increases your ability to protect yourself, help your family, or even save the life of a complete stranger.

Preparedness isn't about expecting the worst.
It's about having the confidence to handle whatever comes your way.

At Salmon River Tactics, my mission is to help build capable, confident, and prepared individuals through practical, hands-on training.

What's one skill you think everyone should learn? CPR? Firearm safety? Land navigation? Wilderness survival? Stop the Bleed®? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Your Brain Is Your Most Important Survival Tool

When people think about preparedness, they often focus on gear.

Gear is important—but it doesn't replace good judgment.
The ability to stop, assess the situation, and make sound decisions under stress is what separates a manageable situation from a dangerous one.

Whether you're on the range, in the backcountry, or responding to an emergency, remember the acronym STOP:
S – Stop. Don't rush into action.
T – Think. What is the actual problem?
O – Observe. Evaluate your surroundings, resources, and potential hazards.
P – Plan. Choose the safest and most effective course of action.

A calm, thoughtful response will almost always beat a rushed reaction.

At Salmon River Tactics, every class—from firearm safety and land navigation to wilderness survival and emergency preparedness—is designed to help you develop not just skills, but the mindset to use them effectively.

Knowledge gives you options. Training gives you confidence.

What's one skill you've learned that has made you more confident in an emergency? Share it in the comments!
