Fidler in the Community ✨

It was a pleasure to join fellow members of the Montgomery Business Assoc. Montgomery Business Association, where I serve on the Board of Directors, alongside representatives of the Montgomery Township, NJ Montgomery Township and montgomerynj_edc Economic Development Commission to celebrate the grand opening of Panera Bread at Montgomery Promenade in Skillman/Montgomery🎉

It’s wonderful to see Montgomery Promenade bringing more businesses and gathering places to our community.

And for our Fidler Conservatory families, there’s now another nearby place to enjoy a coffee, lunch, or a little time to relax while students are in their lessons. ☕️

A milestone earned at the highest level. 🎹

We are proud to celebrate Chengyang Zhu, who has completed ABRSM Grade 8 Piano Performance with Distinction, earning an outstanding 135 out of 150 marks.

Grade 8 is the highest of the ABRSM graded examinations, and Distinction is its highest classification.

Chengyang’s examination repertoire spanned Mozart, Joplin, and Bartók — three very different musical languages requiring technical command, stylistic understanding, discipline, and musical maturity.

As Chengyang’s teacher, I am especially proud to see years of careful preparation reflected in an independently assessed achievement of this level.

At The Fidler Conservatory of Arts, we believe that serious arts education should extend beyond the lesson room. Our students are prepared to develop the technique, musicianship, confidence, and artistic independence necessary to pursue internationally recognized examinations and meaningful performance opportunities.

This certificate represents far more than a final mark. It represents consistency, perseverance, artistic growth, and the courage to bring years of study to an international standard of assessment.

We’re launching a new Music Theory program this year — and it’s built differently from most.
⠀
Most theory classes at the early levels are written work only. Ours combines two traditions:
⠀
🎼 Royal Conservatory curriculum — written theory, composition and guided listening. Children write their own melodies from the very first level, and study real repertoire: Saint-Saëns and Prokofiev at Level 1, Mozart at Level 2, Bach at Level 3.
⠀
🎵 Eastern European school of solfège — singing, ear training and musical dictation. Children hear an interval and sing it before they ever write it down. This is the part most programs leave out, and it’s what turns theory from a subject into a musical skill.

📖 A note speller — reading fluency built one page at a time, so that reading music becomes automatic rather than effortful.
Every student has their own workbook: class work, homework, and a listening log where they write down what they heard.

TWO GROUPS THIS YEAR
▸ Preparatory Theory — for students beginning music study, or those already playing but not yet reading notation confidently. We start with the staff, clefs, note values and first keys.
▸ Level 1 Theory — for students already studying an instrument who read basic notation. We begin the Royal Conservatory Level 1 curriculum alongside solfège.

Why it matters: a child can play the notes correctly and still not understand what they are playing. Theory changes that. And in the RCM system, theory becomes required for certification from Level 5 — far better to build it gradually than to catch up on four levels at once.

Welcome back, Ameya, continuing from our Preparatory Program into the 2026–2027 Academic Year with piano as her major.
⠀
This year brings structured study — repertoire, technique and musical understanding developed together.
⠀
She is also preparing for her first audition with the Music Educators Association of New Jersey. Not a competition: each student performs for a judge and receives a written evaluation. A first audition is less about the result than about learning what thorough preparation feels like.

This is our beautiful student, Ariana, during her private Music Theory class.

Music theory is a fundamental part of music education and should be studied alongside learning an instrument. It gives students the foundation to understand what they are playing—not simply reproduce notes.

Ariana is currently studying Music Theory as a separate subject to fill several gaps in her previous musical education and build a strong foundation for her continued instrumental studies.

Our private theory lessons bring traditional music education and modern technology into the same classroom. Students work with traditional written materials while also learning on our large interactive digital board, where musical concepts can be explored visually and interactively in real time.

The tools are modern. The foundations are classical.

She is no longer simply playing the notes.

Now we are playing Bach — and her relationship with the piano is beginning to change.

Before enrolling at The Fidler Conservatory of Arts, her playing was focused primarily on reproducing the notes, while the technical organization of the hand and fingers had not yet been fully developed or connected to musical understanding.

Today, we are working on both. We are carefully developing hand and finger posture, wrist freedom, coordination, and control — while also teaching her to understand what she is playing: the structure of the music, the direction of each phrase, and the sound she wants to create.

This connection matters. In piano playing, technique and musical thought are not separate systems.

And Bach is an extraordinary teacher. His music asks the student not simply to press the correct keys, but to listen to independent musical lines, recognize patterns, understand relationships between voices, and give each phrase direction.

We are still at the beginning, and the hand posture requires continued work. But something fundamental has already changed:

She understands what she is playing — and is beginning to understand how it should sound.

This is where piano study becomes musicianship.
