💛 PRAIRIE LEA-Small Town-Big Heart 💛

There are towns in this state too small to put eleven players on a field, and they play football anyway. 🏈 It is called six man, the University Interscholastic League sanctions it inside Class 1A, and roughly 150 Texas public schools line up that way every fall.

Six man is not a watered down version of the game. It is a faster and stranger one. The field is shorter and narrower, every player on offense is an eligible receiver, you need fifteen yards for a first down instead of ten, and scores climb high enough that a game can end early once a team is up by 45. People raised on it will tell you plainly that eleven man football looks slow.

What matters more is what Friday night means in a town of three hundred. 🌾 The whole place goes. The cafe closes early. The road out of town fills with a caravan headed to a field two counties over, and the man calling the game on the radio has known every player on that roster since the day they were born.

Some of these programs are hanging on with a handful of students enrolled, and they keep suiting up regardless. Did you grow up around six man football, and does your old school still field a team?
