In honor of Labor Day 2026, we’re checking out Labor Day history and fun facts.

Every year in the United States, Labor Day, the holiday that celebrates workers’ contributions and achievements to the country, is held on the first Monday of September..

Here in the USA, the holiday originated from the turmoil caused by unsafe and unsanitary working conditions. Workers came rallied together to demand change during with a parade in 1882 at Union Square in New York City.

It wasn’t until the 1894 strike and boycott of Pullman Palace Car Company, headquartered in Chicago, that change was firmly established. This strike and boycott led to violent clashes with government deployed troops. As tensions eased, the founding of the holiday was seen as a way to rebuild the relationships between workers and their communities with the company and government.

Because of this series of events, we now heartily celebrate all the accomplishments of the working members of our communities!

Check out the solution to this week’s Math Monday challenge! To find the width of the cart, use the volume of dirt the cart can hold. The volume of a rectangular prism can be calculated by multiplying length, width, and depth (or height). So, divide the volume by the known dimensions, depth and length, and the remaining factor will be the width. The depth of the cart is one-third the length, which is 2 ft. So, 52 divided by 6 and divided by 2 is 4 ⅓ ft or 4 ft and 4 in.

Check out the solution for this week’s Math Monday post! To find whether or not the rug will fit on Devon’s bedroom floor, find the diameter of the rug. First, use the area of a circle, which is radius squared times pi. Divide 78 by pi to get approximately 24.8, or 25. Then, find the square root, which will be approximately 5 ft. This is the radius of the rug. To find the diameter, multiply the radius by 2, which is 10 ft. A 10-foot diameter rug will fit on Devon’s bedroom floor since the dimensions of the floor are greater than 10.

With school underway or just around the corner for students in kindergarten through high school, we would like to post some of our favorite tips to help students stay on top of learning this school year!

Keep a planner to help you stay organized and manage your task load. Keeping a planner is only the first step though. You should also try to start assignments as soon as you learn about them to avoid last minute work and procrastination.
Keep in touch with your teachers. Let them know how you feel about your learning and what areas you would like extra help with. Your teachers can help you understand topics by breaking them down further and providing extra study.

Can you think of some tips that help you stay on top of learning throughout school?

One of students’ goals for the summer should always be to improve creative writing skills. This is because creative writing encourages students to express their ideas, evolve their critical thinking skills, and grow their overall communication skills!

At A Grade Ahead, we encourage students to write critically and creatively as part of our English program, and they get plenty of practice both in the classroom and in their homework.

Sometimes though, students may want or need an extra writing exercise to dig into. If you’re looking for some creative writing ideas for your student, you can check our blog article, “A Grade Ahead Cultivates Creative Writing...”, written by Emily Karth, A Grade Ahead Curriculum Manager.

Emily often posts about writing and reading ideas for students, and she makes sure to break them down by age range to make it easier to select what to write about.
