A Boy in the Leaves by Cindy Pearce Author brought back such a sweet memory for my family. 🍂

See the full read aloud on our channel, link in bio!

While we were reading, my oldest remembered how we used to slide down the slide at my parents’ house right into a big pile of leaves. That memory feels even more special now that the house was sold last year. 💜

I love when a children’s book sparks those little family memories and conversations.

Alphabet cards for ages 3–6, created by a Reading Specialist to help little learners build confidence with letters and sounds.

I am SO excited to finally share the Storybook Alphabet Deck with you!

These cards are officially here and ready to be sold. If you want to be one of the first to get a deck, make sure you’re on my launch list through the link in my bio. 💜

I know it took me a minute to finally reveal these. 😂 There were definitely parts of this process that were completely new to me, and I wanted to make sure I was creating something I really loved before sharing it.

A huge thank you to OmniPress Inc. for being so patient with me throughout the printing process and helping me create something I’m so happy with.

And a huge thank you to Sunny Sunkies for bringing these cards to life. I had an idea of what I wanted them to look and feel like, and I absolutely love how they turned out.

These cards were created by me, an educator who truly loves teaching kids how to read. Every picture word and detail was chosen with early readers in mind to help children practice letter recognition, connect letters with their sounds, and have fun while they’re learning.

I seriously can’t wait to see these being used at home, in classrooms, and during tutoring. 🥹📚

Okay, I lied. I actually LOVE decodable books. 😂📚

Here are 5 reasons why:

1. They encourage kids to actually read the words.
Because children are seeing phonics patterns they already know, they can work through the words instead of guessing from the picture or context.

2. They build confidence.
When kids can successfully read a book, reading feels more enjoyable. That success helps them think, “I can do this,”and hopefully makes them want to keep reading.

3. They show me if a child can actually apply the skill we just worked on.
A strong phonics lesson usually starts with reviewing a pattern or teaching a new one. The decodable book comes at the end, when the child gets a chance to use that new skill while also practicing skills they’ve already learned.
4. They give kids lots of review.
A good decodable book doesn’t only focus on the newest phonics pattern. Kids are also seeing and practicing patterns they’ve already learned, which helps strengthen those skills over time.

5. They help reading become more automatic.
The more accurately children practice decoding words and patterns they know, the more familiar those words become. Eventually, they can read them more quickly and put more of their attention toward understanding the story.

So no, I definitely don’t dislike decodable books. I’m actually a pretty big fan. 😂

If you have a little one learning letters and sounds, I think you’re going to love this.

I’ve shared little peeks of this project along the way, but here’s a closer look at some of the final designs before they head to print.

Each card pairs an uppercase and lowercase letter with a thoughtfully chosen picture word, all brought to life through original illustrations by Sunny Sunkies

And they aren’t just meant to be pretty. Here’s one simple way to use them with your little learner:
O, otter, /ŏ/. 🦦

Say the letter, keyword, and sound together. It gives children a simple routine they can hear and practice again and again.

Save this for your next letter-sound practice, or send it to a parent with a little one learning their letters. 💜

There’s still so much more of this deck I haven’t shown you yet... but not for much longer. 👀

Big feelings belong in learning too. 💜

For this Wiggle Into Reading lesson, we used emotion cards from Little Moments, Big Feelings while reading Maggie and the Mysterious Noisy Bubbles by Mary West.

In her words, “Every feeling has a place.” I absolutely love that message for little learners.

You can see during the read-aloud how much the kids love interacting with the cards, choosing different emotions, and connecting them back to the story.

Books give kids such a natural way to build language, make connections, and talk about feelings too.

I love being able to bring all of that together through Wiggle Into Reading. The group you see here is from Little Bitty Bosses (Boss Up Village )

Does your preschooler learn better when they can MOVE?

That’s exactly why I created Wiggle Into Reading.

This is the program in action at Little Bitty Bosses (Boss Up Village ) , an awesome flexible care center where kids can learn, grow, and play.

Through songs, movement, hands-on activities, and literacy stations, kids ages 3–5 practice letters, sounds, and phonemic awareness while they move and play.

Because early reading skills don’t have to mean sitting at a table with worksheets.

And you might spot some of our favorite Alphapals materials in action too!

Know a preschool, daycare, or learning center that would love this? Send this to them!

How do I get my child to stop guessing words? Teach your child about open and closed syllables! And be patient 🥰
A closed syllable is a word that ends in a consonant (anything that is not a vowel), like cat, fog, and lamp
An open syllable ends in a vowel, and the vowel makes its long vowel sound, like Hi, she, and we.
Then in two-syllable words to can have both like in robot. You can break it down into Ro/bot. The first syllable ro is open, so I says it's long vowels sound (says it's name). The second syllable, bot, is closed so o is saying /o/.

Quick update between school starting and planning for the fall, storytime had to be skipped this week but it will be back next week!

When teaching letter sounds, the word you choose really matters.

For /s/, I use sun ☀️ because that /s/ sound is easy for kids to hear and pull out.

I wouldn’t choose a word like stop because that /s/ sound is immediately followed by another consonant sound.

When I work with students, I try to choose simple words they already know so it’s easier for them to connect the word to the sound.

And yes… that little sun might be another tiny peek at something I’ve been working on. 👀

Every time I looked for this, I always noticed an error or a problem- one piece that didn’t work- but since I’m no artist, I didn’t know what to do.

But now, thanks to Sunny Sunkies I’m getting the chance to bring this idea to life.

Any guesses?
