🔎🌉 Little Language Detectives: Building the Bridge Between Spanish and English
Our second-grade bilingual students in Ms. Lawhon’s classroom became language detectives! 🔎
After reading a short passage, students used magnifying glasses to closely investigate words and make connections between Spanish and English.
The purpose was to begin developing metalinguistic awareness—teaching students to intentionally notice and think about language:
🔎 What looks familiar?
🔎 What sounds similar?
🔎 What is different?
🔎 What do I already know in Spanish that can help me understand this word in English?
As students identified cognates and compared the two languages, they were beginning to engage in cross-linguistic bridging and transfer—using knowledge they already possess in one language as a resource for learning in the other. They also practiced Turn & Talk with different partners, giving students opportunities to collaborate, listen, explain their thinking, and learn from one another.

¡Nuestros estudiantes bilingües de segundo grado en el aula de la Sra. Lawhon se convirtieron en detectives de idiomas! 🔎
Después de leer un breve pasaje, los estudiantes usaron lupas para investigar de cerca las palabras y establecer conexiones entre el español y el inglés.
El propósito era comenzar a desarrollar la conciencia metalingüística, enseñando a los estudiantes a notar y pensar intencionalmente sobre el lenguaje:

🔎 ¿Qué suena similar?
🔎 ¿Qué es diferente?
🔎 ¿Qué sé ya en español que pueda ayudarme a entender esta palabra en inglés?
A medida que los estudiantes identificaban cognados y comparaban los dos idiomas, comenzaban a participar en el puente y la transferencia entrelingüísticas, utilizando el conocimiento que ya poseen en un idioma como recurso para aprender en el otro. También practicaron Turn & Talk con diferentes socios, dando a los estudiantes la oportunidad de colaborar, escuchar, explicar sus pensamientos y aprender unos de otros.
