We talk a lot about resilience in education. Your ability to bounce back, to handle more, to power through the hard thing and keep going.

Resilience is real. You probably have a lot of it.

But here's what nobody says: you can be incredibly resilient and still be destroying yourself in the process.

There's a difference between resilience (your ability to bounce back) and sustainability (whether you can keep going without bouncing back from crisis to crisis). And we've built entire systems around expecting you to have the first one while ignoring whether you have the second.

The problem is that resilience can be a trap. It lets you survive one more year without actually addressing what's making it unsustainable. You get really good at handling it, and then you just... keep handling it. For 15 years, in my case.

It's one week in for a lot of teachers, and I'm guessing you're already tired in a way that sleep doesn't fix.

The first week back always feels like a sprint: new routines, new students (or new clients, new projects, new seasons of whatever you do), everything feels urgent and unfamiliar at the same time. By Friday you're running on fumes and whatever caffeine you can catch.

Here's what I learned after 15 years in education, and what I see with my clients now: the burnout you're feeling this week isn't a character flaw. It's a signal.

That signal is telling you something needs to be different this year than it was last year. Not someday in spring when you're already broken down, but now, while you still have the clarity and energy to actually change something.

For a lot of teachers, syllabi are printed, room decorations are up, and the countdown to the first bell has started. This is usually the week I hear from teachers who are already exhausted and school hasn't even started yet.
