When families have to guess. ❤️

In a stressful moment, even the most loving family can find themselves asking:

“What would Mom want?”
“Did Dad ever tell you what he wanted?”
“Are we making the right decision?”

When wishes haven’t been discussed, families may be left trying to make difficult decisions during an already emotional time.

A conversation today can give the people you love something incredibly valuable later: clarity.

Talk about more than documents and specific decisions. Share the values behind your wishes. What matters most to you? What does quality of life mean to you? Who do you trust to speak for you if you cannot speak for yourself?

Your family doesn’t have to agree with every choice to understand and respect what matters to you.

🚗 What a wonderful morning of learning, conversation, and connection!

Yesterday’s Legacy Learning Series seminar, “Learn the Truth About Driving After 80, brought together older adults from across Southern Maine for an important conversation about driving, safety, independence, and what happens when our abilities begin to change.

A very special thank you to our incredible panelists — Sheriff Kevin Joyce, Karyn Diamond, MD, and Morgan Jameson, Executive Director of ITNPortland — for generously donating their time and expertise to educate our attendees. Their knowledge, honesty, and thoughtful answers helped make a difficult topic easier to understand and talk about.

And while we discussed some serious issues, there was also plenty of laughter! That is one of my favorite things about Legacy Learning Series. We don’t just learn together—we ask questions, share experiences, meet new friends, laugh, and build connections within our community.

We’re pleased to welcome Dr. Karyn Diamond as one of our expert panelists for Learn the Truth About Driving After 80.

Dr. Diamond is a family-practice-trained physician and founder of Diamond Care Advocates, a physician-led patient advocacy service helping individuals and families navigate today’s complex healthcare system.

When it comes to driving as we age, the conversation is about much more than the number on our driver’s license. Changes in vision, reaction time, medications, medical conditions, mobility, and cognition can all play a role in driving safety.

Dr. Diamond will bring the medical perspective to our panel, helping attendees better understand how health changes can affect driving and how older adults and their families can approach these conversations thoughtfully and proactively.

Join Dr. Diamond, Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce, and Morgan Jameson of ITN America for an informative conversation designed to help older adults and their families understand their options before a concern becomes a crisis.

Morgan Jameson – Executive Director, ITNPortland

Morgan Jameson brings a unique combination of experience in nonprofit management, education and training, social services, and older adult transportation to her role as Executive Director of ITNPortland, a nonprofit transportation service providing rides for adults age 65 and older and adults with disabilities.

Morgan also leads the training department for ITNAmerica, the national nonprofit organization that provides technology, resources, and support to community-based transportation services like ITNPortland.

With 13 years of experience at ITN, Morgan has extensive knowledge of the challenges older adults and their families face when driving becomes difficult or is no longer the safest option. Her perspective is also deeply personal. As a caregiver for her father after he developed dementia, Morgan understands how emotional conversations about driving, independence, safety, and transportation can be for families.

Morgan holds a B.A. in Liberal Arts and an M.A. in Psychology. She lives in Westbrook with her husband, son, Labradoodle, and four cats.

We are pleased to welcome Morgan to the Legacy Learning Series panel for Learn the Truth About Driving After 80, where she will share her expertise on driving transitions, transportation alternatives, and ways older adults can remain active, connected, and independent when their driving needs begin to change.

Meet Our Panelist: Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce

We are honored to welcome Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce as a panelist for our upcoming Legacy Learning Series seminar, “The Truth About Driving After 80.”
Sheriff Joyce brings decades of law-enforcement and leadership experience to this important conversation. A 39-year veteran of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, he rose through the ranks before being elected Sheriff in 2010 and currently serves as the 50th Sheriff of Cumberland County.

His leadership experience extends well beyond Cumberland County. Sheriff Joyce is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and has served in leadership roles with the Maine Sheriffs’ Association, the National Sheriffs’ Association, and the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.

At our seminar, Sheriff Joyce will bring a public-safety and law-enforcement perspective to a subject that affects so many older adults and their families: How do we balance independence with safety as driving abilities change?
Driving after 80 isn’t simply about age. It’s about safety, ability, awareness, independence—and knowing when and how to have important conversations.
We are grateful to have Sheriff Joyce joining our panel and sharing his knowledge with our attendees.
