🚨 NOW HIRING: Seasonal camp coaches! 🚨

Are you passionate about youth development, mentoring, and education? Step Up is looking for reliable, experienced individuals to join our team as seasonal camp coaches for our high school summer camps in mid-August.

This is a paid opportunity to work directly with high school students, providing overnight support while creating a fun, safe, and meaningful camp experience.

Interested applicants must:
✅ Pass a background check
🎒 Have experience working directly with high school-aged youth
💪 Have strong communication, relationship-building, and conflict-resolution skills

A warm welcome to our newest Literacy Liberator tutors! 👏

This summer, five Jefferson High School students completed their fellowship training and are providing high-impact literacy instruction to 20 elementary students at Regence Boys & Girls Club in North Portland. Together, they’re helping young readers retain what they learned during the school year and build the skills they need to stay on track with grade-level reading.

The Summer Literacy Liberator team is grounded in the strengths and experiences of peer mentors who reflect the communities they serve, build meaningful relationships with young readers, and embody community-rooted, culturally responsive leadership.

Thank you to our collaborative partners—Portland Public Schools Jefferson High School, Boys & Girls Clubs of Portland Metropolitan Area Regence Boys & Girls Club, and Center for Black Excellence—for making this pilot possible.

🎉 Our Step Up Ice Cream Social was a sweet success!

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for an evening filled with connection, laughter, and delicious treats from Fusion Shave Ice. It was wonderful to welcome our incoming freshmen and families, meet new faces, and kick off the summer together.

We’re already counting down the days until our Step Up Summer Retreat next month—a three-day leadership camp designed to empower and support our newest students. We can’t wait to continue building our community together for an amazing year ahead at Roosevelt High School, PPS Leodis V. McDaniel High School, and Franklin High School, Portland Oregon!

Even though our hallways are quiet right now, our students continue to inspire us. 💚

At Open School, we know that when young people are given the support and opportunity they deserve, they can accomplish incredible things. The Class of 2026 is a testament to that. This year, we proudly celebrated 17 graduates—one of our largest recent graduating classes!

As they begin their next chapter, many of our graduates are heading to college, while others are entering the workforce and paving their own path.

Join us in celebrating just a few of this year’s highlights:

🎓 Delaney, Richie, Juli, and Sherlyn successfully completed STAMP language proficiency testing, with Delaney earning the prestigious Oregon State Seal of Biliteracy.
🌟 Ace, Tyson, Juli, Jackie, and Richie earned college credit through a dual credit math course.
📚 Sherlyn completed the PDX Bridge Program at PCC and earned college credit.
🎒 Ace, Ophelia, Jackie, Sherlyn, and Tyson will be attending college this fall, while Juli and Richie are already working.

Congratulations to all of our students! We can’t wait to see what you’ll accomplish next.

Literacy Liberators was launched less than a year ago, and we’re already seeing its far-reaching impact on our youngest learners across East Multnomah County. This past school year, trained community-based tutors helped young readers build confidence, strengthen literacy skills, and make meaningful academic gains. 📚✨

The results speak for themselves:
📖 87% of students met or exceeded their literacy growth goals
📈 Black and Latino students made the greatest literacy gains
🎒 More than 160 students served across three elementary schools

When local community members are empowered and equipped with the skills to foster effective, inclusive learning environments, kids thrive. We’re incredibly proud of our students and grateful to the community-based educators who made this progress possible!

And thank you to The Oakland REACH, Reynolds School District, and SUN Community Schools for this amazing partnership.

As the school year comes to a close, we’re celebrating the incredible accomplishments of our Step Up students! 👏

Across McDaniel, Franklin, and Roosevelt High Schools, graduating seniors are heading into their next chapter at OSU, PSU, PCC, University of Portland, and more. 🎓 ✨

Each year, the Step Up team connects with families more than 10,000 times, ensuring students feel supported and prepared for what’s ahead. We can’t wait to see where they go next!
