Join us online on Wednesday, June 17th at noon Pacific for our live demo, Perpetual Journaling with Lara Gastinger!

Join us online on Wednesday, April 8th at noon Pacific for our live demo, Phenology Wheels with Sandy Allnock!

In this demo, learn how to create your own phenology wheel—one of the most beautiful forms of nature journaling. A phenology wheel is a circular piece of art with small paintings created each day after your morning walk. Phenology, which is the study of the changes in nature over time, helps you engage with the natural world around you, and a tiny daily painting can transform your relationship with both the outdoors and with art.

Bring a couple of your favorite round brushes, some loose sheets of watercolor paper, and paints in your favorite bright and springy hues. Sandy will be sharing a special discount on art classes for live demo participants, so be sure to join us!

Nature journaling prompt: Dormant tree silhouettes. Today you’ll be taking a closer look at deciduous trees. Practice capturing the unique branching patterns of bare, dormant trees. What directions do the branches take, and what techniques can you experiment with to capture them on paper?

This week’s blog features a guest post from Lisa Work.

”Nature journaling has become, for me, a practice of returning—both to places I love and to a slower way of seeing,” writes Lisa. “In the fall, I love looking up into canopies of yellow, orange, and burgundy. In winter, I find myself enjoying that upward gaze just as much. Even without leaves, the forest is full of movement and quiet energy. Dormancy, I’m learning, is not the absence of life, but life at rest.”

Thank you so much, Lisa, for sharing your art, process, and reflections on nature journaling with us! Read Lisa’s full blog post here: https://arttoolkit.com/blog/2026/01/nature-journaling-prompt-dormant-trees/
